Polytechnic Institute's Roger Wrenn Named COTW
Roger Wrenn, head coach of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Baltimore, Md.) varsity football team, has been named Ravens High School Coach of the Week for the ninth week of the 2007 season. Presented by Toyota, this is the 11th year of the Ravens’ award program.
Wrenn led the Engineers (8-1) to a decisive 38-14 victory over No. 7 Edmondson-Westside on Friday (11/2), earning a playoff berth in the Class 2A North regional playoffs. Poly has a unique offense, utilizing two quarterbacks for every game and shifting between three different running backs.
Coach Wrenn accepts his plaque from Brian Billick.
Senior RB Lee Reynolds ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns, his 22nd and 23rd of the season. The power back has already received two scholarship offers from Division I schools. Reynolds’ efforts, coupled with QB Antoine Goodson running for 125 yards on 14 carries, were part of an offense that finished with 349 yards rushing.
The defense held the Red Storm at bay all night, allowing only 65 yards rushing and 153 passing yards, most of the latter coming in the fourth quarter after the game had been decided. Two interceptions by LBs Michael Wadsworth and Dione Jones gave the Engineers an additional edge.
“Our defense was marvelous,” Wrenn observed. “Real Poly defense. We shut down the defending State champions. Edmondson-Westside scored early, and then after that, they only had one first down until late in the fourth quarter.”
This is the fourth Ravens High School Coach of the Week honor for Wrenn, who last earned the award in 2004 as the head coach of Patterson High School in Baltimore City.
“It’s a great, great honor,” Wrenn said. “This is my fourth time being honored, and each time, it’s a wonderful honor. Everyone is thankful to the Ravens for their support of high school athletics, especially with the whole Poly football field. We are really gratified that you’ve chosen to recognize Poly.”
Each week during the season, the Ravens honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his athletes. Each of the season’s weekly winners will be present at the Colts vs. Ravens home game on Dec. 9, for the naming of the Ravens’ High School Coach of the Year.
A panel of area high school experts selects the coach of the week. The recipients receive:
- A $2,000 donation to the school’s football program
- An award certificate signed by Ravens head coach Brian Billick, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and Gene Washington, the NFL’s Director of Football Development
- A specially-designed hat
