Throughout the Ravens’ magical run to the AFC Championship, various players stepped up. Whether it was on a week-to-week basis, or simply a stellar performer all year, Baltimore players earned their share of awards.
Here is a look at the multiple awards that filled the Ravens trophy case for the 2008 campaign…
ST Brendon Ayanbadejo
Pro Bowl - 3rd Appearance
He led the team with a career-high 30 special teams tackles, helping P Sam Koch average the NFL’s No. 5 net avg. (39.9).
QB Joe Flacco
Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year (NFL.com fan vote)
Flacco became the 1st rookie QB to ever win 2 playoff games, leading the Ravens to the AFC Championship game. He finished the year 257-of-428 for 2,971 yards and 14 TDs.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month - November
Flacco completed 83 of 140 passes (59.3%) for 1,060 yards, 9 TDs and just 2 INTs, leading the Ravens to a 4-1 record.
NFL Rookie of the Week
In Week 8 vs. Oakland, Flacco completed 12 of 24 passes for 140 yards, including a 70-yard TD pass. He also ran for a 12-yard TD and caught a 43-yard pass from fellow QB Troy Smith.
AFC Offensive Player of the Week
In Week 9 at Cleveland, Flacco led the Ravens back from a 14-point deficit, finishing 17-of-29 for 248 yards and 2 TDs.
P Sam Koch
AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
In the win at Dallas, he punted 5 times for a 52.2-yard average (2 in the 20). One of his best plays came on 4th-and-6 when the Ravens lined up for a FG at Dallas’ 22. Taking the snap, he bolted 9 yards for a 1st down, a play that led to a Baltimore TD.
LB Ray Lewis
Pro Bowl (Starter) - 10th Appearance / 1st-Team All-Pro (AP)
Lewis led the Ravens’ No. 2 defense with 160 tackles (84 solo). He also had 3.5 sacks, 3 INTs and 2 FRs on the season.
AFC Defensive Player of the Week
In Week 10 at Houston, Lewis registered 9 tackles and 2 INTs in the Ravens’ 41-13 win over the Texans.
PFW's 2008 Midseason All-Pro Team
In 8 games, Lewis posted a team-high 83 tackles, 1 sack, 5 PD and 1 FF, leading one of the NFL’s top defenses.
WR Derrick Mason
Pro Bowl 3rd-Alternate
Mason had team highs of 80 catches for 1,037 yards and 5 TDs. 2008 marked his 7th 1,000-yard campaign, also surpassing 10,000 career receiving yards (790 for 10,061).
FB Le’Ron M Clain
Pro Bowl (Starter) - 1st Appearance / 1st-Team All-Pro (AP)
McClain rushed for a team-high 902 yards and 10 TDs this season, also helping pave the way for the Ravens’ No. 4-ranked rush attack, which averaged 148.5 yards per game.
DT Haloti Ngata
Pro Bowl 1st-Alternate / 2nd-Team All-Pro (AP)
Ngata, who finished the season leading the D-line with 77 tackles, also posted 2 INTs and 1 sack.
S Ed Reed
Pro Bowl (Starter) - 5th Appearance / 1st-Team All-Pro (AP) - Only Unanimous Selection
In 2008, Reed totaled an NFL-high 9 INTs for 264 return yards. He also had 2 INT-TDs, including an NFL-record 107-yarder.
NFL Defensive Player of the Month - December
In 4 December games – when the Ravens went 3-1 – Reed posted 16 tackles and 6 INTs, adding 1 FF, 2 FRs (1 returned for a 22-yard TD) and a sack.
AFC Defensive Player of the Week
In Week 14 vs the Redskins, Reed forced a fumble, scooped the ball up and returned it for a 22-yard TD. Reed also had 2 INTs in the game, his 2nd dual-pick performance in 2008.
AFC Defensive Player of the Week
In Week 12 vs. the Eagles, Reed posted 2 INTs, a PD and 2 tackles. The picks (returned a total of 150 yards) included his 107-yarder, which is the longest in NFL history.
LB Bart Scott
Pro Bowl - 2nd-Alternate
Scott totaled 104 tackles for the Ravens’ No. 2-overall defense, posting his 4th consecutive season of at least 100 stops.
LB Terrell Suggs
Pro Bowl - 3rd Appearance / 2nd-Team All-Pro (AP)
He was No. 3 on the team with a career-high 102 tackles and 1st with 8 sacks. He also had 2 INTs, both he returned for TDs.
AFC Defensive Player of the Week
In Week 7 at Miami, Suggs returned an INT 44 yards for his 1st-career TD. He also finished with 1 sack, 8 tackles and 3 QB hits.
