Anderson Placed on Reserve/Retired List

The Baltimore Ravens placed offensive tackle Willie Anderson on the reserve/retired list this afternoon, it was announced by general manager Ozzie Newsome.

The rights of players on this list still belong to that player’s original team. Therefore, if Anderson does, in fact, return to the game, the Ravens would still own his rights.

Anderson, a 13-year veteran, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals 10^th-overall in the 1996 NFL Draft.

The four-time Pro Bowler was an anchor on the Bengals’ offensive line throughout his tenure. He was signed by the Ravens just days before the 2008 season opener after being cut. Playing in 14 games and starting 11, Anderson helped strengthen Baltimore’s offensive line and helped the rushing attack gain 2,376 yards and a franchise-record 20 touchdowns on the ground.

He also aided in the protection of quarterback Joe Flacco in his first year, allowing him to throw for 2,971 yards and 14 touchdowns for an 80.3 passer rating, the fourth-highest in franchise history. The O-line also allowed the second-fewest sacks in franchise history with 33.

Anderson was expected to compete with first-round draft pick Michael Oher for the right tackle position heading into 2009. Baltimore also has veteran Adam Terry in the mix at right tackle. Terry has started 18 games in his career, including seven in an injury-marred 2008 campaign.
