Eisenberg: Mackey's Passing Shines Light On Safety

by John Eisenberg 7/12/2011

John Mackey was the kindest of souls in conversation, but he didn't mind a fight. As the first president of the NFL players' union, he battled for higher wages and better health care, and organized a strike that produced better pension benefits. Before a case of frontal temporal dementia infected his razor-sharp mind, he was a testament to the fact that football players were a lot more than brawny pieces of meat.
