Greg Mattison Biography

Greg Mattison joined the Baltimore Ravens as the team’s linebackers coach on February 12, 2008. Mattison brings 37 years of coaching experience as both a position coach and defensive coordinator. Since 1986, Mattison has 11 years of coordinator experience in college. In that time, he coached 18 NFL players, including 7 drafted in the 1st 3 rounds (2 1st-rounders).

As co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach at the University of Florida (2005-07), Mattison led a fast and furious defense. In 2007, the Gators led the SEC and ranked 10th nationally in rushing defense. In 2006, Florida topped the SEC in rushing defense at 72.5 yards per game, which was the 2nd-lowest total in school history and nearly 25 yards less than the next-best SEC team. Mattison’s defense also finished 2nd in the SEC in total defense, allowing an average of 255.4 yards per contest. The Gators’ run defense ranked 5th in the nation, and their total defense rated 6th in the country. His defense produced 3 All-Americans and 5 All-SEC honorees in 2006, including Jarvis Moss, who blossomed into one of the SEC’s most feared pass rushers. Moss registered 15 sacks in his last 2 seasons (2005-06), becoming a 1st-round selection (17th overall by the Denver Broncos) in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Mattison’s defensive unit improved in 14 statistical categories in 2005. Florida ranked 9th in the nation in total defense (299.8 ypg) and 10th nationally in rushing defense (94.9 ypg). The Gators also forced 31 turnovers, tops in the SEC and 9th-most nationally. The unit recorded 33 sacks, the 25th-best total nationally. Florida’s 337 yards on TFL in 2005 was the tops in school history (since records were kept in 1983). In 2005, Florida’s 31 forced turnovers resulted in 114 points, which was 34.3 percent of all the Gators’ points – tops in the SEC. They were also 3rd in the SEC in 3-and-outs (35.3 percent of all opponent possessions).

Prior to his success at Florida, Mattison spent 8 years (1997-2004) at Notre Dame. He served as defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator (2002-04). In 2004, the Fighting Irish defense permitted 94.4 yards per game to rank 9th in the NCAA. He also oversaw the development of current NY Giants DE Justin Tuck, who was named Notre Dame's 2004 Monogram Club Most Valuable Player after posting a team-high 6 sacks and 14 TFL. He also set the Irish career record for sacks, posting 24.5 during his career. In 2003, the Irish defensive line produced 24 of Notre Dame's single-season record 39 sacks, including a school-record 13.5 sacks by Tuck. The 2002 Irish D-line recorded 37 sacks (-241 yards).

From 1998-2001, Mattison was the defensive coordinator/defensive line coach with Notre Dame and was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 1997. In 2001, Mattison’s unit ranked 14th in the nation in total defense, including 10th in the country in pass defense and 22nd in scoring defense.

While at Michigan in 1996, the Wolverines ranked 8th nationally in scoring defense (15.2 points per game), and Michigan was among the top teams in the nation in 2 other categories: pass efficiency defense (20th) and total defense (18th). In 1995, Michigan ranked 11th in total defense (286.3) and 3rd in rushing defense (90.1). Mattison also served as the Wolverines’ defensive line coach from 1992-94.

From 1989-91, Mattison coached the Texas A&M defensive line. In ‘91, the Aggies boasted the country's top-rated defensive unit (total defense – 222.4 yards per game), winning the Southwest Conference title and leading the league in 4 defensive categories (total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense). In 1990, Texas A&M was 19th in total defense, and the Aggies were 13th in 1989.

Mattison was the defensive line coach at Navy for 2 seasons (1987-88). From 1981-86, he was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Western Michigan prior to a stint as the defensive line coach for Northwestern from 1978-80.
