Greg Mattison Biography

Greg Mattison was named the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, succeeding Rex Ryan, the new Jets head coach. Mattison originally joined head coach John Harbaugh’s staff as the team’s linebackers coach in 2008, his first in the NFL. Mattison’s stout resume includes 38 years of total coaching experience, including many years at some of the most productive big-name college football programs. Mattison has 12 years of defensive coordinator experience at the collegiate level. In that span, he coached 18 eventual NFL players, including seven players drafted in the first three rounds and two in the first round – DEs Jarvis Moss and Derrick Harvey at Florida.

2008: (with Baltimore) Led the stellar group of Ravens linebackers, who were a big part of the team’s No. 2-ranked defense ... Defensive leader and future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis earned his 10th Pro Bowl nod, while OLB Terrell Suggs made his third trip to Hawaii ... Defense extended its streak to 35 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher and ranked third in rush defense (81.4 ypg) ... Lewis tallied three INTs, while Suggs returned both of his (44 and 42 yards) for TDs ... Lewis led the team in tackles (160) for the 11th time in his career.

2005-07: (with Florida) 2007: As co-defensive coordinator/D-line coach, Greg helped install an aggressive attacking scheme Gators led the SEC and ranked 10th nationally in rushing defense.

2006: Helped the Gators win the SEC title and National Championship ... Gators defense held Ohio State to 82 total yards, winning the national championship, 41-14 ... Topped the SEC in rushing defense at 72.5 yards allowed per game (second-lowest total in school history) ... Finished second in the SEC in total defense, allowing an average of 255.4 yards per contest ... Gators run defense ranked fifth in the nation, and total defense ranked sixth.

2005: Named co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach ... Unit improved in 14 statistical categories ... Ranked ninth in the nation in total defense (299.8 ypg) and 10th nationally in rushing defense (94.9 ypg) ... Also forced 31 turnovers (resulting in 114 points), tops in the SEC and the ninth most nationally ... Defense recorded 33 sacks, the 25th-best total nationally ... Their 337 yards on TFL were tops in school history (since records kept in 1983) ... Gators were third in the SEC in three-and-outs.

1997-2004: (with Notre Dame) 2004: Served as D-line coach/recruiting coordinator (2002-04) ... Served as D-line coach/recruiting coordinator (2002-04) ... Irish defense permitted 94.4 ypg to rank ninth in the NCAA.

2003: Irish D-line produced 24 of their single-season record 39 sacks, including a school-record 13.5 sacks by current Giants DE Justin Tuck.

2002: D-line recorded 37 sacks (-241 yards).

2001: Mattison’s unit ranked 14th in the nation in total defense, including 10th in pass defense and 22nd in scoring defense ... Was the defensive coordinator/D-line coach (1998-2001).

1997: Served as the defensive coordinator/LBs coach.

1992-96: (with Michigan) Coached the D-line and was defensive coordinator in his final two seasons in Ann Arbor.

1996: Wolverines ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense (15.2 points per game) ... Was among the top teams in the nation in two other categories: pass efficiency defense (20th) and total defense (18th).

1995: Ranked 11th in total defense (286.3) and third in rushing defense (90.1).

1992-94: Served as D-line coach ... Wolverines were Big Ten champs in 1992.

1989-91: (with Texas A&M) Coached the D-line.

1991: Aggies boasted the country’s toprated defense (allowed - 222.4 ypg), winning the Southwest Conference title ... Led the league in four categories (total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense).

Personal: Graduated from Madison (WI) East HS in 1967 where he lettered in football and wrestling in his senior year ... Their son, Bryan, graduated from Iowa in 2007 and was a two-time captain and three-year starter at DE on the Hawkeyes’ football team ... He originally signed as a rookie free agent by the NY Jets in 2008, but spent the 2008 season on the Ravens’ practice squad before a foot injury placed him on Injured Reserve.
