John Matsko Biography

John Matsko, a 36-year coaching veteran, is in his second year leading the Ravens’ offensive line. He guided a youthful group of O-linemen in 2008 that blocked for rookie QB Joe Flacco, allowing only 33 sacks, the second-lowest singleseason total in team history. At the forefront of teaching offensive linemen, Matsko has a tremendous track record, and his forte has always been developing players. Matsko presided over the blocking unit of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history the St. Louis Rams. John has tutored a number of Pro Bowl linemen and was a coach on the high-powered St. Louis offense for seven years (1999-2005). Matsko had tenure at Kansas City, the NY Giants, New Orleans and the Phoenix Cardinals.

2008: (with Baltimore) Matsko’s solid unit helped the Ravens’ running game rank fourth (148.5 ypg) in the NFL...Ravens were the only NFL team to have a player with over 450 (Ray Rice), 650 (Willis McGahee) and 900 (Le’Ron McClain) rushing yards...Team permitted only 33 sacks, second fewest in team history...Provided leadership for the NFL’s youngest starting O-line to begin the season and dealt with injuries that eventually broke up the opening day lineup.

2006-07: (with Kansas City) 2007: Spent his second season as offensive line coach.

2006: The O-line helped pave the way for a KC rushing attack that ranked fifth in the AFC, averaging 133.9 rushing yards per game…Injuries forced the Chiefs to utilize five different starting combinations on the offensive front, but Chiefs linemen still opened plenty of holes for Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson…Johnson established a franchise single-season record with 1,789 rushing yards and set an NFL single-season record with 416 carries…Also established a team record with 11 100-yard rushing performances…Under Matsko, G Will Shields earned his 12th Pro Bowl berth, while G Brian Waters was named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad for a third consecutive year

1999-2005: (with St. Louis) St. Louis led the NFL in total offense for the first three seasons of Matsko’s tenure with the club, while producing three NFL MVPs in the process – QB Kurt Warner (1999, 2001) and RB Marshall Faulk (2000)…John was instrumental in the development of seven-time Pro Bowl T Orlando Pace and two-time Pro Bowl honoree G Adam Timmerman.

2004: Rams made a run for the postseason, despite injuries that ravaged the O-line…Offense lost starting T Kyle Turley prior to the season and starting C Dave Wohlabaugh in the opening game…St. Louis was forced to start nine different players along the line that season…Rams still reached the postseason and claimed a 27-20 Wild Card win at Seattle (1/8/05).

2000: Was part of the Rams’ offensive juggernaut that posted a franchise-best 540 points and averaged a league-best 442.2 yards per game.

1999: Part of a Rams’ club that steamrolled its way to a 13-3 regular season record and a victory over Tennessee in Super Bowl XXXIV.

1997-98: (with NY Giants) Spent two seasons as the O-line coach.

1994-96: (with New Orleans) Posted a three-year stint as O-line coach…Helped T Willie Roaf earn his first three Pro Bowl berths.

1992-93: (with Phoenix Cardinals) 1992: Launched NFL coaching career as the O-line coach on Joe Bugel’s staff…Phoenix RB Ronald Moore became the first Cardinals’ rusher to top the 1,000-yard barrier since 1985.

1987-91: (with USC) Member of the USC coaching staff that helped produce three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances (1987-89), culminating in a 17-10 victory over Michigan (1989)…During his tenure, O-linemen took home All-Conference honors seven times.

1991: Coached T Tony Boselli who was named All-Pac 10 as a freshman.

1989: Promoted to offensive coordinator.

1987: Named O-line coach.

1986: (with University of Arizona) Named offensive line coach.

1985: (with Navy) Instructed the O-line.

1978-84: (with North Carolina) Served a seven-year term as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach.

1976: (with Danbury HS) Head football coach at Danbury (Lakeside Marblehead, OH) HS.

1974-75, 1977: (with Miami-OH) Spent three years at Miami (Ohio) University.

1977: Promoted to O-line coach.

1974-75: Served as a graduate assistant for two years.

College: Earned his bachelor’s degree in business education from Kent State University in 1973…Played football for the Golden Flashes…Has a master’s degree in education from Miami (OH).

Personal: Attended Mentor (OH) HS, where he played football and basketball…John and his wife, Kim, have four children: two daughters, Marie (married to Scott) and Liz, and two sons, John and Michael…Their daughter, Liz, and son-in-law, Roque, have a 1-year-old daughter, Jacqueline, the Matskos’ first grandchild.
