Mark Carrier Biography

Mark Carrier was retained by the Ravens as Defensive Backs coach on January 30, 2008.

Mark Carrier entered his 2nd year with the team as the secondary coach in 2007.  The Ravens were 1st in overall defense (a Ravens' 1st), including 6th against the pass and 1st in INTs in the NFL in 2006. Baltimore also had 5 of their 28 INTs returned for TDs (tops in the NFL), tying their 2004 team record. Carrier, a 3-time Pro Bowl safety and 1990 NFL-Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Chicago Bears, played 11 years in the NFL: 7 with the Bears, 3 with the Lions and 1 year with the Redskins.

Overview: Joined Baltimore in 2006 as secondary coach...The 11-year NFL veteran player also coached the Arizona State CBs for 2 years (2004-05)...Carrier retired from the NFL after the 2000 season (post-Redskins) and launched a career as a sports commentator with various radio and television outlets, including WGN in Chicago, ESPN's XTRA-910 and the USC Football Radio Network... 2004-05: (with Arizona State) Coached Sun Devils' CBs, including Texans DB Chris McKenzie, who was in his then-2nd year with Houston after signing as a rookie FA in 2005...ASU won back-to-back bowl games for the 1st time in nearly 20 years: 2005: ASU won 45-40 over Rutgers in the Insight Bowl and 2004: ASU won 27-23 over Purdue in the Sun Bowl.

2003: (with Brophy College Preparatory) Started his coaching career as the Jesuit Catholic school's secondary coach in Phoenix, AZ.

NFL-PLAYER: Carrier spent 11 seasons as a safety in the NFL, his 1st 7 with the Chicago Bears (1990-96), next 3 with Detroit (1997-99) and final season with the Washington Redskins-(2000), tallying 32 INTs in his career...Carrier, who earned a Pro Bowl nod 3 times while with Chicago (1990-91, 1993), was the NFL-Defensive Rookie of the Year (1990) after leading the NFL with 10 INTs.

2000: (with Washington) Signed with the Redskins in his final year in the NFL...Was 3rd on the team with 102 tackles...Retired from the NFL after the season.

1997-99: (with Detroit) Tallied 2 100-tackle seasons as the starting FS for the Detroit Lions...Was a co-host on Sunday night sports telecasts for Detroit's WKBD-TV while playing for the Lions. 1999: Was a Pro Bowl alternate...Named the Lions' Joe Schmidt Leadership Award winner for the 2nd-straight season. 1998: Was Lions defensive co-captain and named team's Joe Schmidt Leadership Award winner...Honored as the NFL's top FS by Sports Illustrated. 1997: Voted by his teammates as defensive captain and made all the defensive calls in the secondary...Signed as a free agent.

1990-96: (with Chicago) As a Bear, Carrier was a football analyst for WGN-TV and radio programming.

1996: Carrier played in 108-straight games to start his NFL career, before missing his 1st game with an ankle injury...Ravens D-line coach Clarence Brooks was the DL coach in Chicago during Carrier's final 3 seasons.

1994-95: Contributed 2 100-tackle seasons for Chicago.

1993: Carrier was honored with his 3rd Pro Bowl selection.
