Mark Carrier Biography

Mark Carrier launched his NFL coaching career as a Raven in 2006 and has helped Baltimore’s lauded defense combine to produce the most INTs (71) in the NFL over the past three seasons. Led by five-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed’s NFL-high nine INTs in 2008, Baltimore’s defense ranked second against the pass. Carrier was one of six coaches retained by John Harbaugh in 2008. Carrier, an 11-year NFL player and three-time Pro Bowler, was selected sixth overall by the Chicago Bears in the 1990 NFL Draft. Mark retired after the 2000 season and became a sports commentator with various radio and television outlets, including WGN in Chicago, ESPN’s XTRA-910 in Phoenix and the USC Football Radio Network.

2006-08: (with Baltimore) 2008: Ravens were No. 2 both in total defense and pass defense...S Ed Reed was voted to his fifth Pro Bowl and was the NFL’s only unanimous All-Pro selection...He stole an NFL-high nine picks, returning one an NFL-record 107 yards for a TD…His 43 INTs, a franchise best, rank first among all active NFL players since entering the league in 2002…Reed’s 1,144 return yards are also first in the NFL since 2002, while his 26.6 average per return among players with at least 30 picks is first in NFL history…Ravens defense returned 5 INTs for TDs (second to GB’s six), tying team record (’04 and ’06).

2007: Reed earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod after leading team with seven INTs…S Dawan Landry started every game, posting 91 tackles, one sack and seven PD…CB Corey Ivy subbed for a number of injured DBs and started13 games, contributing 63 tackles, three sacks, one INT, 16 PD, one FF and one FR.

2006: the Ravens ranked first in overall defense, including first against the run…Totaled a franchise-best 28 picks…Both Reed and CB Chris McAlister earned their third Pro Bowl honors…Five INTs were picked off by Baltimore’s rookie S Dawan Landry (one for a TD), the most in the NFL for a rookie DB in 2006…It tied a Ravens’ rookie record for picks in a single season with Reed (’02), McAlister (’99) and CB Duane Starks (’98)…Baltimore dominated the turnover battle, earning a +17 ratio, producing the NFL’s second-most take-aways with 40 (Chi. was tops with 44)…Was best in the NFL on third down, limiting opponents to just a 28.8% success rate…Ravens produced 22 sacks on third down (second in the NFL) and eight INTs, tying for the fourth most.

2004-05: (with Arizona State) Coached the Sun Devils’ cornerbacks...ASU won back-toback bowl games for the first time in nearly 20 years.

2005: ASU won 45-40 over Rutgers in the Insight.com Bowl.

2004: ASU defeated Purdue, 27-23, in the Sun Bowl.

2003: (with Brophy College Prep) Spent one season as secondary coach.

NFL Player (1990-2000): Played 11 seasons as a CB for three NFL teams.

2000: (with Washington) Played final season, tallying 32 INTs in his career...Mark retired after the 2000 season.

1997-99: (with Detroit) Was co-host on Sunday night sports telecasts for Detroit’s WKBD-TV while playing for the Lions.

1999: Was a Pro Bowl alternate…Named the Lions’ Joe Schmidt Leadership Award winner for secondstraight season.

1998: Was Lions defensive co-captain and named team’s Joe Schmidt Leadership Award winner…Named the NFL’s top FS by Sports Illustrated.

1997: Defensive captain and made all the calls in the secondary.

1990-96: (with Chicago) 1996: Played in 108 straight games to start his NFL career, before missing his first game with an ankle injury... While a safety for the Bears, Carrier was a football analyst for both WGN-TV and radio.

1994-95: Posted two 100-tackle seasons.

1993: Was honored with his third Pro Bowl selection.

1991: Earned his second trip to the NFL Pro Bowl.

1990: Selected as the sixth overall pick by the Bears in the NFL Draft…Led the NFL with 10 INTs, the highest single-season mark in the ’90s...Exceptional rookie season led to first Pro Bowl selection and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award...Posted a career-high 122 tackles and a career-high 20 PD…Also notched five FFs.
