Mike Pettine

Mike Pettine was retained by the Ravens as the Outside Linebackers Coach on January 30, 2008.

Mike Pettine (pronounced PET-tin) entered his 3rd season as the outside linebackers' coach and his 6th year as a Raven in 2007. Baltimore finished 1st in the NFL in overall defense, posted a franchise-high 13-3 record in 2006, and secured a 1st-round bye in the playoffs. Besides coaching OLBs, Pettine is also a computer specialist, who has produced innovative coaching programs that utilize football video to develop playbooks for offense and defense and to analyze game video of opponents.

Overview: Named OLBs coach in 2005...Pettine works directly with defensive coordinator Rex Ryan who says: "Mike is my right-hand man. Our backgrounds are very similar. My father is a legendary NFL coach and his father is a legendary football coach, who recently retired as the winningest HS football coach in Pennsylvania history. I know Mike will make a name for himself in this league. He's one of the best communicators I know, and he relates well with the players. He's smart, and he's dedicated."...Named defensive assistant in 2004...Spent 2 years working with the D-Line after a year as a coaching assistant/quality control specialist.

2002-2006: (with Baltimore)

2006: Four Raven LBs made the Pro Bowl, Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Adalius Thomas, Terrell Suggs – both Thomas and Suggs were selected through voting process...Thomas posted 11 sacks, Suggs 9.5, which nearly made the Ravens the 1st team in NFL history (since the league recognized sacks as an official stat in 1982) to boast 4 players with at least 10 sacks apiece during a season...(DT Trevor Pryce recorded 13 sacks and LB Bart Scott tied Suggs with 9.5)...Ravens recorded 60 sacks (2nd) to Chargers 61...Defense has allowed 1,833 points (16.4 ppg) over the past 6 seasons, the best mark in the NFL and more than 100 points fewer than the next best defense (Tampa Bay-1,940 points).

2005: Pettine's OLBs set new marks...Thomas and Suggs, made an impact at the hard-hitting position, combining for 11 of the team's final 18 sacks (last 5 games) and accounting for 6 sacks in the final 3 games...Despite being double- and sometimes triple-teamed, Suggs set a career-high 86 tackles, finished 2nd on the team with 8 sacks and tied a career high with 6 FFs...Thomas set a new career high with 9 sacks and set a franchise record with 3 defensive returns for TDs...Adalius was voted team Most Valuable Player by the Baltimore media...LB Peter Boulware remained the Ravens' sack king, reaching 70 for his career and hitting the 500-tackle milestone...LB Roderick Green played in 16 games, subbing on defense (posting 2 sacks), but finishing 2nd in special teams tackles (17).

2004: Promoted to defensive assistant and helped coach the defensive line with Ravens veteran D-Line coach Rex Ryan.

2003: Assisted and coached the D-Line with Ryan...Using computer technology, Pettine assisted in developing playbooks, producing scouting reports, and analyzing game video of opponents as a quality control specialist.

2002: Worked as an assistant in football video operations...Also assisted the Ravens' coaching staff.

1997-2001: (with North Penn HS) 1999: Pettine's squad was featured on ESPN's original documentary The Season...Show aired in 2000...His Knights won 45 games in 5 seasons, including the 1st of 2 playoff appearances in school history. 1997: Named head football coach at North Penn HS.

1995-96: (with William Tennent HS) 1996: Team established a school record with 9 wins. 1995: Named head coach.

1993-94: (with U. of Pittsburgh) Served as a defensive graduate assistant under head coach Johnny Majors for the Panthers.

1988-92: (with Central Bucks West HS) Was an assistant coach for his father, Mike Pettine Sr., who recently retired as the winningest coach in the history of HS football in the state of PA...Mike Sr. had a 326-42-4 record in 33 seasons.

COLLEGE: Graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in economics...Played at UVA under head coach George Welsh (1984-1987) and was a 2-year letterman at-free safety (1986-87)...Led the team in picks in 1986 with a school-record 3 INTs in 1 game (vs. North Carolina State).

PERSONAL: Attended Central Bucks West (Doylestown, PA) HS...Lettered in football and basketball...Was All-State at quarterback and defensive back...Mike and his wife, Marlene, live in Westminster, MD with their 3 children: Megan (13), Ryan (10) and Katie (6).
