Vic Fangio Biography

Vic Fangio was named the team’s linebackers coach in January 2009. Fangio, one of six assistant coaches retained by John Harbaugh in 2008, spent 11 years in the NFL as a defensive coordinator for three teams (Carolina, Indianapolis and Houston). Prior to joining the Ravens in 2006, Fangio-coordinated defensive units led the league or were in the top three in seven or more major statistical categories. His defenses ranked in the top seven in the takeaway category three times (1995-96, 1998). Coached the “Dome Patrol,” the stellar corps of LBs that led the Saints’ defense: Ricky Jackson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills and Vaughan Johnson.

2006-08: (with Baltimore) 2008: Served as special assistant to the head coach/defense for Harbaugh...Defense finished second in the NFL overall, third against the run and second in pass defense.

2006: The Ravens’ “D” ranked first overall in the NFL, second against the rush, sixth against the pass and set several franchise records…Baltimore earned a 13-3 record and a first-round bye...Was hired as special assistant to the head coach/defense.

2002-05: (with Houston) 2004: Defense set a team record with 22 INTs (fifth in NFL), scoring five TDs…Kept opponents out of the end zone for 13-straight quarters, from Week 13 to Week 16…That scoreless run was the NFL’s best of the season.

2003: Five opening day defensive starters landed on IR, including two Pro Bowlers: CB Aaron Glenn and DE Gary Walker.

2002: Named defensive coordinator for Texans under head coach Dom Capers…Ranked eighth in the AFC in total defense and fourth in the conference in pass defense…Ranked seventh in the NFL in third-down defense, eighth in red zone defense, fourth in penalties and ninth in yards per play…At Heinz Field in Week 14, the young Texan team beat the Steelers, 24-6, with the defense scoring all three TDs.

1999-2001: (with Indianapolis) 2001: Colts posted a 6-10 record.

2000: Finished season with a 10-6 record…Defense tallied 42 sacks…Vic’s defense made strides in all statistical categories, allowing Indy to post a stellar 23-9 record in two seasons (1999-2000)…Fangio helped turn around a Colts’ team that had been 6-26 in the two previous seasons (1997-98).

1999: Colts posted a 13-3 record in Fangio’s first season, in what was the greatest one-year turnaround in NFL history…Named defensive coordinator and marked his third hire under Jim Mora…Indy won its first division championship in 15 seasons... Defense improved from last to 15th.

1995-98: (with Carolina) 1996: Posted a 12-4 mark…Ranked first in third-down defense, first in sacks, second in first downs allowed and fifth in take-aways…Defense allowed just 218 points, which ranked second in the NFL…Panthers yielded five TDs and 56 points after halftime for the season, breaking Chicago’s 1985 record of 71 points…Record still stands today…Coached three All-Pro LBs in Lamar Lathon, Sam Mills and Kevin Greene…Won the NFC West title in their second season…Reached the NFC Championship Game.

1995: Named defensive coordinator for expansion Panthers under head coach Dom Capers…Tied for seventh in NFL in total defense; ranked sixth in scoring defense, 10th in rushing defense, fifth in take-aways and second in defensive passer rating.

1986-94: (with New Orleans) 1992: A 12-4 mark gave the Saints a 23-9 record for the last two seasons…Coached the vaunted “Dome Patrol,” the stellar corps of LBs that led the Saints’ defense: Rickey Jackson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills and Vaughan Johnson…It was the only LB unit from one team to be voted to the Pro Bowl on the first ballot…Voted best LB unit in NFL history by NFL Network.

1988: Saints posted a first-place finish at 10-6.

1987: Advanced to playoffs for the first time at 12-3.

1986: Named OLBs coach.

1984-85: (with Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars) Defensive assistant in USFL…Teams won back-to-back USFL championships.

1983: (with North Carolina) Hired as a graduate assistant for the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill.

1982: (with Milford Academy) Spent one season as a defensive coordinator.

1979-81: (with Dunmore HS, PA) 1980: Promoted to defensive coordinator.

1979: Launched his coaching career as a LBs coach.

College: Attended East Stroudsburg University.

Personal: Attended Dunmore (PA) HS…Was inducted into the Northeast Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in 1993…Vic has a son, Christian, and a daughter, Cassie.
