Bill Tessendorf, named the Ravens’ vice president of medical services in 2005, is in his 35th season with the franchise. He is the 2nd-longest tenured trainer in the NFL (John Omohundro has been with the Arizona Cardinals for 39 years). In 1998, Tessendorf received the National Athletic Trainers Association’s (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
1996-2007: (with Baltimore) Bill and his assistants, Mark Smith (who has been with the club since 1979), Kevin Domboski and Kyle Schimmoeller, have earned the reputation as one of the top training staffs in the league. 2000: Bill was inducted into the Northern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame. 1999: Welcomed into the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Hall of Fame in Athens, OH. 1998: Tessendorf also received the National Athletic Trainers Association’s (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
1973-1995: (with Cleveland) 1989: Bill’s crew was honored as the “NFL’s Athletic Training Staff of the Year” by the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society...The group was recognized at the annual Ed Block Courage Awards banquet held in Baltimore… The Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association also recognized Bill by bestowing upon him the Clinical/Professional Trainer of the Year Award in May of 1989. 1973: Joined the Browns as an assistant trainer while working towards his master’s degree in exercise physiology, which he received from Kent State University in 1976.
1972: (with Kent State) Was a graduate assistant in the fall...Took a job as an elementary school teacher in the DeKalb (IL) public school system for the 1972-73 school year.
COLLEGE: Graduated from Northern Illinois University, with a B.S. in education (1971).
PERSONAL: In the summer of 1972, Tessendorf worked with former veteran Browns trainer Leo Murphy...Served as treasurer of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society for 10 years...He is also past president of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (1990-94)...As he did with the Cleveland Browns’ facility in 1990-91, Bill coordinated the construction and design of the new Ravens’ training complex, which opened in Oct. 2004...Bill and his wife, Nan Jean, have a daughter, Amy, who recently graduated from the University of Maryland after double-majoring in marketing and communications...The family resides in Carroll County, MD.
