Kevin Byrne has been an integral part of the franchise for the past 27 years. The Cleveland native oversees the Ravens’ public and community relations departments, plus the content for the club’s various communications vehicles, including the team website and many print publications. The NFL has invited Byrne to provide media relations assistance at 22 Super Bowls and 2 Pro Bowls. At the Super Bowl, Byrne annually oversees one of the participant’s quote teams and helps coordinate media activities.
OVERVIEW: For 12 years (1985-96), he was the chairman of the NFL’s Pro Football Writers’ Liaison Committee...The NFL has selected him to make a number of media relations and crisis management presentations at league meetings, including a seminar with NFL coaches in 2004 and 2006; and to NFL front office managers in 2003 and 2005 at the Stanford Graduate School of Business... Byrne’s duties have included contract negotiations, directing the team’s marketing department and serving on committees to interview and select head-coaching candidates.
1996-2007: (with Baltimore) 2007: Invited by The Baltimore Sun to be the keynote speaker at the annual Sun High School Athletes of the Year banquet in June. 2006: Gave a speech on media relations to the NFL’s coaches at an annual seminar during league meetings...Byrne was also invited by the NFL in 2004. 2005: Gave a presentation for the 2nd time (2003) to NFL front office managers at the league’s annual conference at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. 2004: Was promoted to senior v.p. of public & community relations. 2001: Along with the Ravens’ senior director of publications, Francine Lubera, Byrne co-wrote Super Journey: Diary of the Ravens World Championship Season following the Super Bowl XXXV victory (34-7) over the NY Giants (1/28/01). 1998: Served on a committee to interview and select head-coaching candidates.
1981-1995: (with Cleveland) Byrne coordinated the start of the team’s television productions in Cleveland when the Browns were the 1st NFL team to produce their own preseason games and weekly TV shows (1984)...When it left Cleveland, the team was producing 5 weekly TV shows, including Browns Insider, which was nominated for a local “Emmy” for “best sports programming” 3 of 5 years (1990-94)...Was involved in the interviewing of 2 head coaches.
1979-81: (with Trans World Airline) Was director of public affairs for TWA.
1977-1978: (with St. Louis Cardinals) Joined the NFL as the then-youngest PR director in the league for the St. Louis Cardinals.
1974-77: (with Marquette) Was the sports information director for his alma mater...Worked with the legendary Al McGuire and the Warriors’ 1977 NCAA basketball national championship team.
1971-74: (with U. of Missouri-St. Louis) Byrne’s 1st job was as a sports information director.
COLLEGE: Byrne earned a degree in journalism from Marquette University (1971), where he was selected to Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society, and was a 4-year member of Marquette’s wrestling team.
PERSONAL: Attended St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) HS, where he is a board member and former chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees...Received the St. Edward Alumnus of the Year Award in 2000...Byrne is chairman of the board of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake...Has chaired the annual Gridiron Halloween party, which has raised over $700,000 for Goodwill...Kevin and his wife, Sally, have 4 children, all of whom are college graduates: daughter, Shannon (Kenyon College and master’s from Loyola College; also currently working on a doctorate in psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson), and sons, Sean (Boston College and master’s from USC), Tim (Maryland Institute College of Art) and Conor (Boston College)...The Byrnes reside in Monkton, MD.
