Back Spasms Force Kelechi Osemele To Sit

Posted Oct 6, 2013

The second-year left guard was replaced by A.Q. Shipley in the starting lineup.

The Ravens made it out of Sunday’s game against the Dolphins relatively healthy.

The only injury note from Head Coach John Harbaugh was that starting left guard Kelechi Osemele left the game in the first quarter because of back spasms that initially started during pre-game warmups. A.Q. Shipley took over for Osemele when he came out of the game early in the first quarter.

“He was tightened up in pre-game and we tried to get him in the game,” Harbaugh said. “We had already set the 46-man roster. He went the first series. He couldn’t go, and that’s why we made the change to A.Q. Shipley.”

While Osemele was the only player to leave the game with an injury, the Ravens did have to overcome several deactivated players with prior injuries in order to get the 26-23 victory. The Ravens had only three wide receivers active, as Jacoby Jones (knee) and Marlon Brown (thigh) were both unable to suit up. The Ravens also cut veteran Brandon Stokley on Saturday, as he was dealing with a groin injury.

That left the Ravens with just Torrey Smith, Tandon Doss and Deonte Thompson as the team’s receivers.

“With the injuries that we had, I just think you have to give credit to our guys,” Harbaugh said.

The other big injury concern coming into Sunday was the status of cornerback Lardarius Webb, who missed practice time because of a thigh injury he suffered against the Bills. Webb was able to suit up and play the entire game.

“We had injuries at pretty much every position and our guys fought through it,” Harbaugh said. “I’m proud to come down here in this heat and win a game. I think it speaks to our level of conditioning and I think it speaks to our heart.”
