Chris Canty Headed To Injured Reserve With Torn Pectoral

Posted Dec 14, 2015

John Harbaugh said the veteran defensive end played well and was a strong locker-room leader.

Another Raven’s season is over.

Veteran Chris Canty suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks and will be placed on injured reserve (IR), Head Coach John Harbaugh announced Monday.

Once the move is officially made, the Ravens will have 18 players on IR. That’s one short of tying their team record for IR players under Harbaugh (2008 and 2014).

Canty, 33, played in his 11th season. He missed four games near the start of the year with a calf injury, but has played well when he’s been on the field.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Canty was the Ravens’ fifth-best defensive player this year, receiving a positive-6.3 rating.

The Ravens terminated Canty’s contract on Feb. 27, not long after last season ended, but re-signed him about three weeks later. Canty has played three seasons in Baltimore and been a regular starter.

“It’s kind of a disappointment, obviously, because he’s such a good football player and he’s played really well,” Harbaugh said. “I’m so glad that we were able to bring Chris Canty back this year. He’s put 12 or 13 really good football games together.”

Canty’s impact went beyond his on-field contributions.

“He’s played really great football, but more than that, he’s been a tremendous leader,” Harbaugh said. “He’s been a stand-up guy. He’s led the way with a bunch of young guys on defense, especially the young front-seven guys. I have nothing but the upmost respect for Chris Canty and what he’s done for us this year.”

Because of Canty’s age and experience, it leaves questions as to his future in the league. He has one more season on his two-year deal signed this past offseason. Canty has been active in preparing for a possible career in sports broadcasting once his playing days are over.

For now, the Ravens will give more playing time to defensive ends Brent Urban and Kapron Lewis-Moore, as well as rookie defensive tackle Carl Davis. Lewis-Moore has been active for just two games and Davis hasn’t suited up for the past three.
