The injury bug has hit Baltimore’s secondary.

Top cornerback Jimmy Smith left Sunday’s game against the Chiefs in the first quarter because of thigh injury and he was quickly ruled out for the rest of the day.

Smith was injured as he chased after running back Charcandrick West on his 38-yard touchdown. West outran him to the end zone, and Smith limped off the field and went right to the medical staff. They took him to the locker room and he was ruled out a few minutes later.

Head Coach John Harbaugh did not have an update on his status after the game.

With Smith out, the Ravens turned to recently promoted second-year cornerback Jumal Rolle to take on a bigger role in the defense.

Rolle, who was called up from the practice squad Tuesday, took reps as the team’s third cornerback. He played outside cornerback when the Ravens had three cornerbacks on the field. The Ravens used Lardarius Webb and Shareece Wright as the two cornerbacks in their base defense.

“We had guys to come in and step up,” cornerback Lardarius Webb said. “Jumal Rolle came in, played good. We’ve got Shareece here and I thought he came in and did an awesome job when Jimmy [Smith] went down.”

Smith is the latest starter to go down in an injury-riddled season for the Ravens. The team lost starting defensive end Chris Canty for the season last week, and they currently have 18 players on injured reserve.
