Crockett Gillmore Shows His Bulldozing Side

Posted Sep 21, 2015

The Ravens tight end had his biggest career game yet, catching two touchdowns in the loss.

Last week, Crockett Gillmore came up just short of making the game-winning play to beat the Denver Broncos.

This week, he didn’t get a chance to make the game-winning play, but he did leave defenders in his wake.

The Ravens’ new starting tight end had the biggest game of his young two-year career, catching five passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns in the Ravens’ 37-33 loss in Oakland.

Gillmore’s most impressive play was a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Gillmore caught the pass at the 7-yard line. He was immediately grabbed high by linebacker Curtis Lofton and safety Taylor Mays. Gillmore broke out of their grasp, then plowed through one more Raiders defender as he stretched the ball over the end zone.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pound tight end showed off those skills a bit in the third preseason game in Washington. Now he’s doing it in the regular season.

“Any time I catch the ball, I’m trying to score,” Gillmore said. “If they don’t wrap up, it’s going to be hard on them. I just drove my feet and found the goal line.”

Gillmore showed off his speed on his first touchdown. He caught a pass about 15 yards out and beat Raiders safety Charles Woodson on a race to the end zone and dove in.

Gillmore was targeted by four passes in the season opener and had six passes come his way in Oakland, third on the team behind Steve Smith Sr. and Kamar Aiken.

“Crockett is big for us down in the red zone,” Flacco said. “We give him the ball and let them try to tackle him. Obviously they’re having a tough time tackling him now, so he’s going to be a big red-zone target.”

Gillmore caught just 10 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown as a rookie. He was targeted by just 15 passes as he played behind pass-catching tight ends Dennis Pitta (for the first three weeks) and Owen Daniels.

With Pitta still recovering from his hip injury and Daniels now in Denver, Gillmore is a key target in the Ravens offense.

“I always thought that I was an all-around tight end. There were some other people that didn’t know,” Gillmore said. “This is what I’ve felt like I’ve done from the first day. I took what I did here with the Ravens last year and just continued to practice.”
