Ed Dickson Signs With Carolina Panthers

Posted Apr 10, 2014

Former Ravens tight end Ed Dickson signed a one-year contract and will get a fresh start.

Ed Dickson will get a fresh start.

The former Ravens tight end signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday afternoon, the Panthers announced.

The Ravens expressed interest in re-signing Dickson, but inked tight end Owen Daniels instead.

The Ravens drafted Dickson in the third round in 2010, one round before fellow tight end Dennis Pitta. Dickson has great athleticism and played in a potent Oregon offense. He was expected to be a strong receiver to open up the intermediate and deep middle of the field.

Dickson’s best season in his four years in Baltimore was in 2011 when he started all 16 games and caught 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns.

But Dickson struggled with injuries and drops after that, and didn't reach his full potential.

With Pitta’s emergence as a receiver and Dickson’s drops, Dickson shifted into more of a blocking role with the Ravens, which became a strength of his. He still started 25 games the past two years, but averaged 23 catches for 249 yards and scored just one touchdown.

Now Dickson will have a chance to prove himself in a new place in Carolina. He will play alongside Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, who is more in the receiver mold.

“Ed is a young player who has shown he is a capable blocker as well as receiver in the league,” Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera said. “He provides experienced depth at the tight end position, and we look forward to having him in the mix.”
