Ed Dickson Unfazed By Depth-Chart Move

Posted Sep 20, 2012

Ed Dickson has three receptions for 45 yards through two games so far.

Ed Dickson didn’t know he’d moved down a spot on the depth chart until a reporter asked him about it.

And he didn’t flinch when informed.

The Ravens’ tight end had been listed as the team’s starter since Todd Heap departed before last season. Dickson was a third-round pick in 2010 while tight end Dennis Pitta was a fourth rounder.

But Pitta now appears to have taken over the top spot.

“We’re both going to get numerous amounts of opportunities,” Dickson said. “You just have to make plays. If you see the matchup where it’s me on a guy who can’t guard me, then we’re going to go to me. If it’s Dennis and a guy who can’t guard him, they’re going to him.”

Dickson, who is big, fast and able to stretch the field, had 14 more receptions for 123 more yards and two more touchdowns than Pitta last year.

But Pitta has gotten off to a hotter start in 2012. Pitta has 13 grabs for 138 yards and one touchdown, and has been targeted a team-high 23 times. Dickson has three grabs for 45 yards in the first two games.

“We’re going to get our time,” Dickson said. “If everybody’s running their precise routes, [defenses] can’t run with everybody. We know Joe [Flacco] will find us.”

Dickson said it doesn’t matter who’s the starter. What matters is winning games.

“The depth chart is basically to tell our bodies,” Dickson said. “It’s who’s going to be out there and who’s not. We’ve been doing a lot of stuff with packages with Dennis and me. Not one coach came up to me and said, ‘You lost your job,’ or something like that. We’re both out there together to make those plays together.”
