Ravens fans will soon be able to own their piece of M&T Bank Stadium history.
The Ravens are transitioning to natural grass in 2016, and the process of removing the artificial surface started Thursday morning. Once all the turf is removed, pieces of it will be made into collectibles fans can purchase.
The pieces for sale will come from between the 20-yard lines. It will be cut into small squares and packaged in commemoratives cases, and fans will be able to purchase them closer to the preseason.
The removed turf saw some of the most memorable games in Ravens history. The synthetic surface was installed in 2010, so it was in place during the Super Bowl XLVII season in 2012. Ravens legend Ray Lewis also played his last game in Baltimore on that turf.
In addition to the smaller pieces fans can purchase, larger turf pieces will be for sale at the third-annual Retail Outlet Sale tentatively planned for late April. The proceeds from the sale of those chunks benefit the Ravens Foundation.
A company called the Motz Group is overseeing the field replacement, and the new grass is expected to be installed in early May.
