Haloti Ngata: Ravens Wanted Patriots Rematch

The memory of last year's AFC championship still lingers, but it’s two different teams.


Haloti Ngata said he wasn’t rooting for anybody in Sunday’s divisional playoff game between New England and Houston.

But he’s happy with the result.

The Ravens will get an AFC championship rematch in Foxborough, Mass., a year after falling short there in heartbreaking fashion.

Even Ngata said it’s a great story.

“I think we personally kind of wanted to play the Patriots again,” the Pro Bowl defensive tackle said.

“If we go to the Super Bowl, it would be great to go through Foxborough and win it there. It’s another matchup that we’re excited about and hopefully we can get it done this year.”

The memory of last year’s AFC championship loss, the dropped pass by Lee Evans and missed kick by Billy Cundiff, isn’t something that will ever totally leave Baltimore’s mind.

Even though the Ravens beat the Patriots with a last-second field goal in Week 3, it didn’t erase last year’s AFC championship loss.

“The feeling that we had in that locker room, I think we all wanted to get back to the AFC championship,” Ngata said.

Guard Marshal Yanda said the sting last year’s loss lingered for two months. But he followed that up by saying they’re two different teams now than they were then, so it’s a totally different game.

Coming off an upset win over the top-seeded Denver Broncos, the Ravens are feeling confident and thrilled to get another shot at the Patriots.

“The way we left it last year didn’t sit well with us,” tight end Dennis Pitta said. “So, we’re excited to be in this position again and give it another shot.”
