Hammond's Justin Carey Named Ravens High School Coach of the Week

Posted Oct 23, 2013

Justin Carey, varsity head football coach of the Hammond (Columbia, Md.) Golden Bears, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Carey is the seventh recipient of the award in 2013.

Last Friday (10/18), Hammond (5-2) traveled to River Hill (6-1) and snapped the Hawks’ 30-game winning streak with a decisive 47-38 victory in Clarksville, Md. After trailing 28-14 at halftime, the Golden Bears’ offense emerged behind a dominant performance by senior QB Tyler Martin. Martin, who threw for 441 yards and six touchdowns, orchestrated the comeback for Hammond, which included 20 fourth quarter points. River Hill, who has won the last two 3A state titles, has not lost since being defeated by Hammond in Sept. 2011.

In his first year as head coach, Carey has the Golden Bears positioned to compete in postseason play for the first time in three years. “We need to continue to have efficient practices, be good in situational football, and play as a team,” Carey explained. “Finishing games and staying together have been our key points all season, and we’re going to need to stick to those the rest of the year to make a run in the playoffs.”

Hammond hosts Howard (Ellicott City, Md.) this Friday (10/25) in a Howard County matchup against the Lions, who are also 5-2 this season.

Each week during the season, the Ravens will honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance at the Ravens-Vikings home game on Dec. 8 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

Each weekly recipient receives:

  • A $2,000 donation to the school’s football program
  • An award certificate signed by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh
  • A specially-designed Coach of the Week hat
