Jimmy Clausen To Get More Practice Reps With Matt Schaub Banged Up

Posted Dec 7, 2015

John Harbaugh said he expects starter Matt Schaub to play Sunday despite getting pounded in Miami.

Head Coach John Harbaugh was asked Monday if there’s a thought of switching starting quarterbacks this week against the Seattle Seahawks.

Schaub was banged up in Sunday’s 15-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins and threw two game-deciding interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. In his two starts, Schaub has thrown a pick-six in each game.

Harbaugh indicated Schaub will play Sunday if he’s healthy enough to do so.

“I think it’ll depend on Matt, where Matt’s at, and how ready he is to play,” Harbaugh said. “Matt’s the quarterback. Jimmy’s the backup quarterback.”

Schaub absorbed several big hits from Miami’s defensive line Sunday.

He hit his head hard on the turf after being knocked to the ground, and went through the concussion protocol. Schaub also suffered a shoulder injury late in the game, though he returned for one final drive. Harbaugh also said Schaub took a direct hit to his knee.

Despite all the pounding Schaub took, Harbaugh believes he’ll be ready to go when the Seahawks come to town.

“Matt looks like he’s going to be able to play,” the head coach said. “He got bounced around pretty good in the game – too much – and we’ll just see how he makes it through the week. I think he’s going to be OK; he’s a tough guy.”

After taking no sacks in his first start last week against the Browns, Schaub was sacked three times by the Dolphins. Schaub completed 32 of 46 passes for 308 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Harbaugh was asked if the Ravens would consider making a switch at quarterback moving forward. The team claimed Jimmy Clausen off waivers on Nov. 24.

Claussen already started one game against the Seahawks earlier this season. Then a member of the Bears, he completed nine of 17 passes for 63 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdowns or interceptions.

The former 2010 second-round pick out of Notre Dame has a career 60.1 quarterback rating and has started 12 total games.

With Schaub taking so many hits in Miami, Harbaugh indicated he may miss practice time this week.

“It gives a chance to get Jimmy the reps in there, which will help him too,” Harbaugh said. “I don’t think Matt needs the reps to play in the game. It’s going to be the same offense that we’re going to run.”
