Joe Flacco Is AFC Championship Exception

Posted Jan 24, 2016

Flacco is the only quarterback not named Manning, Brady or Roethlisberger to win the AFC title since 2003.

Tired of seeing Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady in the AFC championship? Or, even worse, Ben Roethlisberger winning the title game?

Well, Joe Flacco and the Ravens are the only exception to the dominant Manning-Brady-Roethlisberger trio over the past 13 years.

In 12 of the past 13 seasons, either Manning, Brady or Roethlisberger has represented the AFC in the Super Bowl.

The run will extend this year with Brady and Manning facing off for the right to go to Super Bowl 50 Sunday night in Denver. Brady will be playing in his 10th AFC championship game over the past 15 years.

However, there was one bright day that defied the trend.

In 2012, Flacco defeated Brady in New England, taking the Ravens to Super Bowl XLVII. Flacco outdueled Brady that day, completing 21 of 36 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Brady completed 29 of 54 passes for one touchdown and two interceptions.

Last year, Flacco threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns, but tossed a late interception that sealed a Ravens loss.

Here’s a look at the AFC championship history over the past 13 seasons:

  • 2003-2004: Patriots (Brady) 24, Colts (Manning) 14
  • 2004-2005: Patriots (Brady) 41, Steelers (Roethlisberger) 17
  • 2005-2006: Steelers (Roethlisberger) 34, Broncos (Jake Plummer) 17
  • 2006-2007: Colts (Manning) 38, Patriots (Brady) 34
  • 2007-2008: Patriots (Brady) 21, Chargers (Philip Rivers) 12
  • 2008-2009: Steelers (Roethlisberger) 23, Ravens (Flacco) 14
  • 2009-2010: Colts (Manning) 30, Jets (Mark Sanchez) 17
  • 2010-2011: Steelers (Roethlisberger) 24, Jets (Sanchez) 19
  • 2011-2012: Patriots (Brady) 23, Ravens (Flacco) 20
  • 2012-2013: Ravens (Flacco) 28, Patriots (Brady) 13
  • 2013-2014: Broncos (Manning), Patriots (Brady) 16
  • 2014-2015: Patriots (Brady) 45, Colts (Andrew Luck) 7
  • 2015-2016: Patriots (Brady) vs. Broncos (Manning)
