John Harbaugh Happy For Anquan Boldin

Posted Sep 9, 2013

John Harbaugh stressed that it was a difficult business decision to trade Anquan Boldin.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh avoided hearing fans’ gripes over trading wide receiver Anquan Boldin after his field day Sunday afternoon.

But he couldn’t avoid his wife.

“I haven’t heard any of it, probably by design,” Harbaugh said with a grin. “My wife did mention it to me – a couple times.”

Harbaugh was watching the 49ers-Packers game Sunday afternoon, just like everyone else. He watched Boldin haul in 13 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown.

But while it was painful for many Ravens supporters to watch, Harbaugh took a positive outlook on it Monday afternoon.

“He’s a great player. There’s nobody here that didn’t want Anquan back,” Harbaugh said. “He plays for another team now. I happen to have a rooting interest in that team, I guess. … I’ve got a rooting interest in Anquan too. He played well.”

The Ravens traded Boldin after he would not agree to a reported $2 million pay cut from a $6 million salary, which would have been one of the highest salaries on the team, to $4 million. Instead of cutting Boldin, Harbaugh phoned his brother, Jim Harbaugh, and traded the veteran receiver to the 49ers for a sixth-round pick.

The Ravens were counting on using tight end Dennis Pitta in Boldin’s departed role, and for some of their young receivers to step up. Pitta went down with perhaps a season-ending hip injury, and Baltimore is still looking for reliable targets.

“It was a business decision both ways. I was definitely disappointed it went the way it did,” Harbaugh said. “But I’m happy for his success and I’m looking forward to our success as well.”
