John Harbaugh Ready To Prove Worthy Of Contract Extension

Posted Sep 9, 2013

John Harbaugh discusses his new four-year contract that goes through 2017.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh talked about his new four-year contract extension for the first time Monday afternoon.

After thanking all those involved – from the front office to his coaches and players – Harbaugh showed some inner motivation.

“I’m just very excited about it and ready to move on and prove that decision was the right one,” Harbaugh said with a grin.

News of Harbaugh’s extension broke minutes before Thursday night’s regular-season opener, but the deal was reportedly agreed upon months before being announced. Harbaugh didn’t go into specifics about when it was reached.

It reportedly makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL at nearly $7 million per year. Only three coaches make more than $7 million: the Patriots’ Bill Belichick, Saints’ Sean Payton and Chiefs’ Andy Reid.

“First of all, it’s an honor to be coaching here,” Harbaugh said. “It’s an honor to be a coach in the National Football League, and then to be able to do it with the Baltimore Ravens, it’s a dream come true and beyond what you could even hope for.”

Harbaugh said he was grateful to Owner Steve Bisciotti, General Manager Ozzie Newsome, President Dick Cass and Senior Vice President of Public and Community Relations Kevin Byrne.

“I’m just so grateful to … everybody in this organization top to bottom and sideways that makes coming to work every day such a treasured thing for us,” Harbaugh said.

“Something like this is a team thing. I think any time a player has an opportunity to extend a contract or come here, it’s because it’s a team effort. Coaches have done a great job, players have done a great job, I’d like to think it benefits everyone here that’s part of our team.”

Under Harbaugh, the Ravens have a 63-30 overall record, tying New England and Belichick for the NFL’s most total wins since 2008. Harbaugh has gone to the playoffs every season as head coach, and led the Ravens to three AFC title games and the Super Bowl XLVII championship.

With Harbaugh steering the ship, the Ravens have perennially overcome different hardships to continually be in the playoff chase. Now he’s doing it for the first time without defensive leaders Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
