Lardarius Webb Sits After Failing Conditioning Test

Posted Jul 30, 2015

The veteran cornerback is in good shape, but not in good enough anaerobic conditioning to practice.

The Ravens took the field for the first full training camp practice without veteran leading cornerback Lardarius Webb because he failed his conditioning test.

All players are required to pass a conditioning test upon first reporting to camp because Head Coach John Harbaugh uses it as a barometer of whether they are in good enough shape to make it through practice safely.

Since he did not pass the test, as Harbaugh announced, Webb was placed on the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

“It’s always a big deal,” Harbaugh said. “It was a big deal when Jacoby [Jones] didn’t pass it. It was a big deal when Haloti [Ngata] didn’t pass it. It’s always a big deal. You want to see guys pass it.”

Harbaugh said Webb is in “really good shape in a lot of different ways.” It was evident in the way he moved during the conditioning test and in the weight room.

“But it’s not the kind of anaerobic shape he needs to be in to come out here in practice,” Harbaugh said. “The idea is that if I go play after play after play and I begin to get fatigued and I can’t move like I would, I could get a fatigue-type injury.

“He’s a little behind that way, certainly. And he’s going to have to make up the ground.”

Webb will work on his conditioning and can take the test again soon. He will come off the PUP list as soon as he passes.

“He’s hard on himself,” Harbaugh said. “He’s disappointed he didn’t make it, just like you would expect. I know he’s very determined to get through it.”

Defensive tackle Casey Walker was also placed on active PUP because of knee tendinitis. Tight end Dennis Pitta (hip) and safety Terrence Brooks (knee) also began training camp on PUP, as previously reported.

Two starting offensive linemen made their return to the field, however. Right tackle Rick Wagner (foot) and center Jeremy Zuttah (hip) practiced fully, including 11-on-11 drills. They did get some snaps off to limit their work early on.

“Very encouraged by all of the guys, including those guys [Wagner and Zuttah], that are out there,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve got to be smart with those guys as we go.”
