There are five current NFL coaches who have one Super Bowl title on their resume:
Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin (2008 season)
New Orleans Saints’ Sean Payton (2009)
Green Bay Packers’ Mike McCarthy (2010)
Baltimore Ravens’ John Harbaugh (2012)
Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll (2013)
Who will be the first to get his second ring?
That was the question the NFL AM crew kicked around on set, and you couldn’t go wrong with selecting any of the impressive coaches. However, analyst Terrell Davis gave a convincing three-fold argument for Harbaugh.
That argument includes Harbaugh’s postseason advancement record, his quarterback ![]()
1) Postseason Advancement
Harbaugh has led his team to the playoffs in six of his seven seasons (.857) as the Ravens head coach since 2008.
“This guy has only missed one postseason in his seven years of coaching,” Davis said. “They’re always in it. You’ve got to be in it, to win it, right? So, he’s always going to put that team in a position where they have a chance to go to a Super Bowl.”
While Harbaugh has the best postseason advancement record (.857), his counterparts are no slouches and aren’t far off. Tomlin and Payton have both advanced to the playoffs five of eight years (.625), McCarthy has made it seven of nine years (.778) and Carroll has made it four out of five (.800).
2) Joe Flacco
There are some impressive quarterbacks teamed up with all five coaches. Flacco, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers all have a Super Bowl ring, and Ben Roethlisberger is a two-time champion. So, it’s a compliment to name Flacco as one of the reasons Harbaugh will beat out his counterparts.
“When you have a quarterback like Joe Flacco … he’s not going anywhere anytime soon,” Davis said.
3) January (And April) Magic
Finally, how can you deny the Ravens’ mojo in January and February?
Baltimore has a 10-5 playoff record during the Harbaugh era, and the Ravens have never been one-and-done once they made it to the dance. The other coaches’ records don’t come close to 10 wins: Tomlin (5-4), Payton (6-4), Carroll (7-3), McCarthy (7-6). (It should be noted that Carroll is on a strong streak. He’s had seven wins in just five years.)
“There’s something about [the Ravens] that is magical in January,” Davis said. “There’s something that happens where they just tend to turn it on and play extremely well.”
Added NFL AM host Rhett Lewis: “It certainly helps Harbaugh that [General Manager] Ozzie Newsome is often magical [with the draft] in April and May.”
Canty Looks Forward To Sacking QB Jameis Winston
The football world talks non-stop about the top-two rated quarterbacks in the draft: Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. That talk usually stops in Baltimore because the Ravens are set at quarterback and neither of those two prospects would make it to pick No. 26 anyway.
A Ravens defensive player is keeping an eye on the two, however, because he could get a chance to compete against the two signal callers next season.

Canty didn’t hesitate in naming Winston.
“Jameis Winston!” Canty said with a chuckle. “Jameis Winston has that confidence – almost borderline cockiness. Listen, I think he’s going to be a heck of a player; I’m just looking forward to hitting him a few times before he really develops into that elite quarterback. I’d definitely say Jameis Winston, and I’m ready to get after him.”
Steelers’ Ike Taylor Retired. Torrey Smith ‘Won The War.’
Another high-profile Steeler that has added to the Baltimore-Pittsburgh rivalry is hanging up his cleats.
Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor announced his retirement yesterday after winning two Super Bowl rings during his career. The announcement came just five days after safety Troy Polamalu’s retirement. The two were drafted together in 2003.
While Taylor wasn’t as big of a figure in the AFC North rivalry as Polamalu, he and Torrey Smith had some memorable bouts. In fact, Smith admitted that Taylor was one of only a few players that could bring out his trash-talking side.
“I haven’t met anyone that talks as much trash as him,” Smith said last October. “When I get to play him, it’s always pretty fun because I’m not a guy who talks, but he gets it out of me every single time.”
So how did Smith feel when Ike officially retired?
@ryanmink I still won the war haha
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) April 14, 2015 Indeed Smith did win the war, and it ended superbly.
In their last two matchups against each other, Smith caught six passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. That included a touchdown catch that propelled the Ravens past the Steelers in the wild-card playoff round last January.
In their final regular-season matchup, Smith beat Taylor early on a 54-yard bomb and then finished it off three players later with a 7-yard touchdown. Let’s enjoy reliving the two plays below (mobile users tap “View in browser” at the top of the page to watch.)

Jamison Hensley takes a look at Missouri pass rusher Shane Ray, who is a top-10 talent, as a potential prospect for the Ravens: “Simply put, Ray plays like a Raven. Team officials gushed over Ray's motor during the recent pre-draft luncheon. He has an explosive first step as a pass-rusher and is a strong effort player against the run. … The Ravens remember how ![]()
The 2002 draft was the only time the #Ravens picked a player they didn't have ranked higher than their draft spot. They got Ed Reed (No 24).
