Matt Elam Confident Contract Will Get Done Soon

Posted Jun 19, 2013

The rookie safety is the Ravens' only unsigned draft pick from the 2013 draft class.

The Ravens have one clear offseason move left before training camp opens next month.

That’s getting first-round draft pick Matt Elam under contract.

The safety out of Florida is the only member of the teams’ 2013 draft class who remains unsigned, but he’s confident that the deal will get done in the near future.

“It will be taken care of soon,” Elam said this week as the team finished up rookie football school. “That’s not an issue, it will be taken care of real soon.”

The rookie pay scale is consistent under the NFL’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement, so there isn’t expected to be any snags in the negotiating process. Elam has yet to hire an agent, but he will get a four-year deal likely worth about $6.767 million, according to The Baltimore Sun

While Elam still has to sign with the Ravens, he recently inked a contract with Baltimore-based sports apparel company Under Armour. The company also has the naming rights to the Ravens’ practice facility, the Under Armour Performance Center.

“That’s very exciting, especially seeing all this Under Armour stuff around here,” Elam said. “I know that Under Armour is on the rise, and I love the tough mentality that Under Armour has.”

The rookies finish their offseason workout program Thursday, and will then head to Canton, Ohio, for the NFL’s rookie symposium on Sunday. The players will get about five weeks off before returning to town for training camp in late July, and that’s when the intensity will ramp up even more.

“My goal is to continue to get better and do whatever I can to help the team win,” Elam said. “That’s my first goal – to continue to improve and get better. I just want to do whatever I can to help this team win."
