The Ravens’ third-year safety has been suspended one game, without pay, by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Elam is currently on injured reserve due to a major elbow injury, but will begin serving the suspension immediately. So he won't miss any games, but will miss out on some of his salary.
“We have been aware of this situation for a while,” the Ravens said in a statement. “Matt has been in our building rehabbing his injury on a regular basis, and he will continue to do so.”
The Ravens’ 2013 first-round pick has had a difficult start to his career. He became a near instant starter as a rookie and made 77 tackles, three passes defensed and one interception.
But Elam lost his starting job last year and was turned into more of a versatile defensive back. The Florida product looked to be in line for a rebound year, but tore his biceps in training camp, knocking him out for the season.
It’s Elam’s first NFL punishment.
