Matt Schaub, Jimmy Clausen Could Both Play Sunday

Posted Dec 9, 2015

With Matt Schaub banged up after last week’s game, the Ravens will get Jimmy Clausen ready to start.

The Ravens quarterback situation is very much up in the air heading into Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Matt Schaub’s status is in doubt after he took several big shots against the Dolphins, and the Ravens are getting backup Jimmy Clausen ready to play this week.

“Maybe we’ll play them both, we’ll just see how it goes,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said.

The Ravens also brought in additional insurance to the quarterbacks room by signing Bryn Renner to the practice squad. Renner, who spent training camp with the Ravens, could ultimately get moved to the active roster if Schaub is unable to play.

Schaub was clearly banged up after the loss to Miami, where he took hits to the knees, head and shoulder. He also went through the NFL’s concussion protocol during the game and passed.

Schaub still finished the game against the Dolphins, but the Ravens plan to limit his practice reps during the week to give him more time recover.

“It’s going to probably be a tolerance issue and how well he moves around and stuff,” Harbaugh said. “We’re not going to practice him too much early in the week.”

Schaub didn’t practice Wednesday, but said he still expects to play.

“I’m gearing all my mindset and everything towards Sunday,” he said. “We have to take it a day at a time. We have to see how things heal up, how the health feels and go forward from there. But right now, we’re taking it day by day, hour by hour.”

Having Schaub sidelined during practice will allow for more first-team reps for Clausen, who has been in Baltimore for just two weeks.  The Ravens signed him when starter Joe Flacco suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 11.

“It’s good to get Jimmy the reps anyway,” Harbaugh said. “Jimmy needs the reps more than Matt does.”

Clausen, 28, is a six-year veteran who has previously been with the Panthers and Bears. Clausen played in two games for the Bears this year, completing 23 of his 40 passes for 184 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

“The biggest thing with being a backup quarterback is that you have to stay ready and prepare like you are a starter,” Clausen said. “I’ve been doing that my whole entire career while I was backing up, so that’s just my mentality going through this week and the rest of the season.”

Clausen’s lone start this year actually came against Seattle, and the Bears lost 26-0.

“Losing doesn’t help, but just going in there and preparing for them and practicing all week to get ready for them is definitely going to help if I get in there,” Clausen said.

Harbaugh has made it clear that Schaub is still the starter, but the Ravens are giving themselves options based on his health.

“If Matt can go, he will,” Harbaugh said. “Matt is tough. He showed that in the game. He’s tough as nails, and I wouldn’t be shocked if we see him play.”
