News And Notes 8/17: Terrell Suggs Challenges Offense

Posted Aug 17, 2015

Williams, Waller leave early. Butler makes nice grabs. Smith Sr., Melvin exchange shoves.

Terrell Suggs is never tough to miss on the practice field.

And the veteran outside linebacker made sure the offense knew exactly where he was during Monday’s three-hour training camp practice. Suggs consistently generated a pass rush and was also disruptive in the running game.

During a series of 11-on-11 drills, Suggs forced quarterback Joe Flacco to get rid of the football by beating left tackle Eugene Monroe around the edge. A couple plays later, he stuffed running back Lorenzo Taliaferro in the backfield for a loss.

Suggs was his usual jovial self throughout practice, singing out lyrics to an Ed Sheeran song and engaging in some banter with members of the offense.

He also challenged his defensive teammates at times. When safety Will Hill nearly picked off a pass from Flacco intended for Steve Smith Sr., Suggs yelled to Hill, “Come on Will, be great!”

Here were some of the other notes of the day:

-   The heat appeared to take a toll during practice, as the Ravens practiced in full pads with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. Rookie tight end Maxx Williams and wide receiver Darren Waller both left practice early seemingly related to the heat. An exact update on their status was not given because Head Coach John Harbaugh was not scheduled to talk with the media today.

-  Wide receiver Breshad Perriman (knee) missed his 12th straight practice. Offensive linemen John Urschel (concussion), Robert Myers (concussion) and Kelechi Osemele (foot), cornerback Asa Jackson (knee) and outside linebacker Steven Means (leg) all missed practice. Wide receiver Michael Campanaro, cornerback Lardarius Webb and offensive lineman Jah Reid also didn’t practice, but they did not have any previously reported injuries.

-   Wide receiver Marlon Brown (hamstring) and defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson (arm) both returned to practice, but they were eased back into action during the physical practice.

-  Harbaugh’s father, Jack, was in town watching practice from the sidelines.

-  Wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. and cornerback Rashaan Melvin got into a little shoving match after a drill. They each had a hold of each other’s jerseys and then exchanged shoves before Hill stepped in between them and the team moved onto another drill. Smith and Melvin matched up against each other again several times later in the day, and there were no other issues between them.

-  Wide receiver Jeremy Butler had a few nice snags during practice, including a touchdown over Melvin during 11-on-11 drills.

-  Wide receiver Kamar Aiken continues to look like a starting wide receiver.  He caught a touchdown pass down the sidelines from Flacco during seven-on-seven work, and also badly fooled rookie cornerback Tray Walker with precise route running during one-on-one drills.

-  Punter Sam Koch worked as the field goal kicker as the Ravens let Justin Tucker rest for most of practice.
