News And Notes 8/2: Timmy Jernigan Disruptive

Posted Aug 2, 2015

Veterans get off day. Perriman sits with knee bruise, Dumervil has tendinitis, other injury updates.

Timmy Jernigan made sure everyone knew where he was during Sunday’s practice.

The second-year defender was a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line, pushing his way into the backfield on multiple occasions. He then let the offensive linemen know he got the best of them.

On one occasion, Jernigan slipped through the line to stuff running back Lorenzo Taliaferro for a loss. Jernigan made the stop and then let out a yell along with a little dance move.

A couple plays later, he pushed center Jeremy Zuttah to the ground and applied pressure to quarterback Joe Flacco. Jernigan and Zuttah got in each other’s faces, but they quickly went back to their respective huddles without a scuffle.

It was a strong all-around day from the defensive tackle who is slated to replace perennial Pro Bowler Haloti Ngata. It is also worth noting that Jernigan’s strong practice came on a day where starting guard Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele both had the day off.

Here were some other notes:

- Head Coach John Harbaugh gave several veterans a rest day, which is standard during camp. Yanda, Osemele, Steve Smith Sr., Terrell Suggs, Chris Canty, Daryl Smith and Justin Forsett all sat out Sunday’s practice.

- Rookie receiver Breshad Perriman continues to sit out with a knee injury he suffered during the first practice. Harbaugh said the injury isn’t serious, but the Ravens want to make sure he’s healthy before getting him back on the field. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil didn’t practice again because of tendinitis. Harbaugh said the veteran pass rusher won’t return until he’s 100 percent, but he’s expected to be fine.

- Cornerback Rashaan Melvin also sat out practice after tweaking his hamstring Saturday.  Fellow cornerback Tray Walker also hurt his hamstring.

-  The defense won practice for the second straight day. The Ravens have a scoring system to track who wins each day, and the defense came out on top by a final score of 70-68. The outcome came down to the final few minutes of practice, and both sides were arguing about why they deserved to get the points.

-  Quarterback Joe Flacco carved up the defense during a red-zone seven-on-seven drill. He connected with both Marlon Brown and Kamar Aiken for touchdowns.

-  Rookie running back Buck Allen had another strong showing. He displayed good vision carrying the ball out of the backfield, and his hands are as good as advertised. Allen scored a touchdown on a screen pass over the middle of the field, and he took advantage of some first-team reps with Forsett resting.

-  Linebacker C.J. Mosley isn’t shying away from contact after offseason wrist surgery. He wears a protective brace on his left arm, but he’s still initiating contact whenever he has a chance.

-  Safety Will Hill continues to make plays and put himself in good position around the football. He broke up a potential touchdown pass from Flacco to wide receiver Michael Campanaro in the back of the end zone, and he also delivered a big hit on Taliaferro on the sidelines. The hit from Hill took the 225-pound running back off his feet.

-  Defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson came up with an interception off quarterback Matt Schaub near the end of practice. Tyson made an athletic play to bat down the pass and snag it for the interception.

-  Harbaugh is testing his young returners during practice. The head coach is trying to put the pressure on them by getting in their faces as they’re trying to field punts. He ran in front of both Campanaro and DeAndre Carter as they were fielding punts, flailing his arms to distract them. Both caught the punts cleanly.
