News And Notes 8/21: Success In Philly Could Lead To More Joint Practices

Posted Aug 21, 2015

The three days of work concluded with a 'shadow practice.' Harbaugh praises Eagles organization.

The Ravens capped off their three days of joint practices with the Eagles on Friday in a lighter session that Head Coach John Harbaugh called a “shadow practice.”

Harbaugh said the three days of work were a “success,” and suggested more joint practices could be in the future.

"Jeffrey [Lurie, Eagles owner] mentioned to me that maybe we do it again in two years when we're not playing each other," Harbaugh said. "It's definitely a possibility."

The proximity of the two teams, and Harbaugh’s relationship with Lurie from his time as an Eagles coach makes future practices an attractive possibility. Joint practices are a growing trend around the NFL, and the two teams didn’t have any major incidents like when other teams combined for a few days.

"I definitely want to thank the Luries, Jeff and Christina, and the whole Eagles organization,” Harbaugh said. “It was first class all the way. They treated us really well. We had three really good practices against a good football team, and I think we improved."

Here were some other notes from the final day of work:

-  The teams practiced together for about an hour at walk-through speed so they could be at full strength for their preseason contest Saturday evening at Lincoln Financial Field. The “shadow practice” meant defenders didn’t contest any passes, and there were no contact drills.

-  Wide receiver Breshad Perriman (knee), cornerback Lardarius Webb (hamstring), and offensive linemen Kelechi Osemele (foot), Rick Wagner (foot), and Jah Reid (back) all didn’t practice. Wide receivers Steve Smith Sr. and Michael Campanaro didn’t practice, but they appeared to just have a rest day.

-  While the tempo of practice was definitely slower, the Eagles ran their no-huddle offense for much of practice. Even though the drills were half speed, it was still good experience for the Ravens to face a team that gets to the line in a hurry to run the next play.

-  Tight end Maxx Williams made a fingertips grab in the back of the end zone.

-  Both Harbaugh and Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly stress the importance of special teams, and they spent about a third of Friday’s practice working on that area of the game. They ran a mixture of kickoff return drills and also mixed in some onside kick attempts.

-  Wide receiver Marlon Brown hauled in a touchdown catch on a Hail Mary attempt, but the Eagles had four defenders surrounding him who didn’t try to bat down the pass. He won’t get that treatment in a game.
