News And Notes 8/3: Rookies Impress At Stadium Practice

Posted Aug 3, 2015

Brief scare with Steve Smith. Justin Tucker gets big cheers. Dumervil, Perriman remain sidelined.

Training camp went on the road Monday night.

The Ravens held a free, open practice at M&T Bank Stadium and more than 22,000 fans attended the annual event. Practicing at the stadium breaks up some of the monotony of training camp, and the large crowd also helps get the young players accustomed to the NFL atmosphere.

For many of the rookies, the event was their first taste of what it’s like to play at M&T Bank Stadium, and it’s an appetizer ahead of next week’s preseason opener vs. the Saints. The newcomers didn’t disappoint.

First-round pick Breshad Perriman (knee) didn’t participate, but some of the other rookies had a strong evening. Tight end Maxx Williams drew loud applause when he caught a long pass over the middle during seven-on-seven drills, and he hauled in a handful of shorter catches to move the chains in full-team drills.

Running back Buck Allen continued his strong training camp with a touchdown off a screen pass. Allen caught the pass in the flat and then put a nice juke move on linebacker Albert McClellan to get to the second level where he sprinted into the end zone.

Wide receiver Darren Waller also found the end zone when he beat safety Will Hill on a deep touchdown pass over the middle during one-on-one drills.

The Ravens practiced for nearly three hours and then players signed autographs before a post-practice fireworks and laser display.

Here were some of the other highlights from the evening:

- Perriman and outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil (tendonitis) both missed their fourth-straight practice. The two players watched from the sidelines, which they previously hadn’t done.

- Cornerbacks Rashaan Melvin (hamstring) and Tray Walker (hamstring) didn’t practice. Wide receiver Marlon Brown (reported back) also did not practice.

- A brief scare came when receiver Steve Smith Sr. was hobbled after going up for a jump ball down the sidelines against cornerback Kyle Arrington. Smith limped out of the drill for the trainer to take a quick look at him. He sat out just one play before jogging back to the huddle. Smith then came out of the drills again and limped around for several minutes before returning to action. Smith got the better of Arrington later when he caught a fade route over him in the end zone during 11-on-11 drills. Smith tossed the ball into the crowd after the touchdown.

- Owner Steve Bisciotti took in practice from the sidelines chatting with Olympian Michael Phelps for much of the night.

- Cornerback Jimmy Smith looks like he picked up where he left off last season. He made a great play to intercept Flacco in 11-on-11 drills on a pass intended for wide receiver Michael Campanaro on an out route. Smith then turned upfield for a nice return after the interception. He played consistent coverage throughout the night and also broke up a handful of passes.

- Cornerback Lardarius Webb is also having a strong overall camp. He broke up a pass intended for Smith Sr. in the corner of the end zone during full-team drills, and the veteran receiver gave him a congratulatory tap on the helmet after the nice play.

- Safety Brynden Trawick made a nice play during one-on-one drills by picking off quarterback Joe Flacco on a pass intended for wide receiver Trent Steelman. Trawick jumped the slant route and beat Steelman to the ball for the interception. A few plays later, he batted down a pass from quarterback Matt Schaub.

- Perhaps the biggest cheer of the night came when kicker Justin Tucker booted a 64-yard field goal. Tucker always seems to be at his best playing in front of  Baltimore fans. He also connected on attempts from 50, 51 and 58 yards.
