Ravens Claim Jimmy Clausen As Backup Quarterback

Posted Nov 24, 2015

Baltimore has officially placed Joe Flacco on season-ending injured reserve.

The Ravens have claimed quarterback Jimmy Clausen off waivers to be their backup to new starter Matt Schaub.

Baltimore officially placed Joe Flacco (ACL/MCL) on season-ending injured reserve.

Clausen became available after the Bears waived him Monday to promote David Fales from the practice squad. It came at a good time for the Ravens.

Clausen worked with Ravens Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman for the past two seasons in Chicago, which gives him a mental leg up in joining Baltimore midway through the season. He already knows the framework of the system.

Head Coach John Harbaugh indicated that would play into their decision when speaking with the media on Monday.

“Someone who has some experience would be a plus,” he said.

Clausen has played in two games this season. He entered after Jay Cutler suffered an injury in Week 2 and went 14-for-23 for 121 yards and an interception. Clausen started the week after and went 9-of-17 for 63 yards and two interceptions.

Over the past two seasons, Clausen has played in six games and started two. He has posted a quarterback rating of 65.3 over that time.

The former Notre Dame standout was a second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2010. He started 10 games for the Panthers as a rookie and struggled with a 58.4 quarterback rating and three touchdowns to nine interceptions. He didn’t see any action for the Panthers the next two years before the two parted ways.

Baltimore needed an immediate backup quarterback behind Schaub, and could still add another to the practice squad. Harbaugh indicated that Bryn Renner, who played well for the Ravens in the preseason, is a possibility for that job.
