Ravens Cut Safety Christian Thompson After Suspension

Posted Oct 1, 2013

Christian Thompson, a fourth-round pick last year, returned from suspension this week.

The Ravens have cut safety Christian Thompson after one season.

Thompson was reinstated by the league this week after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

The Ravens were reportedly granted a roster exemption for Thompson through next Monday, so they didn’t have to make an immediate roster move to place him on the active roster.

Thompson was a fourth-round pick last year out of South Carolina State. He played in seven games as a rookie and recorded no statistics.

Thompson fell behind in the safety competition this summer. He was often on the third-team defense, and was being outshined by undrafted rookie Brynden Trawick among others.

Baltimore added reserve safety Jeromy Miles off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals last week. The Ravens are going to try to get Miles, who was dealing with a hamstring injury, on the field this week, and are excited to see what he will do on special teams.

“We’ve been playing against him the last few years,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said last week. “We think he’s going to be a heck of a developmental safety for us, and we think he’ll give us immediate impact on the special teams part of it.”

The addition of Miles and the team’s desire to keep Trawick on the practice squad didn’t leave much room for Thompson.

Thompson told The Baltimore Sun in August, “Yeah, I just got to grow up. Everybody has been supporting me. Nobody has been down on me."
