It’s not often that a player says he had a blast in a brief walk-through practice.
But time on an NFL field has been few and far between for Ravens second-year defensive end ![]()
Urban was cleared and participated in Monday’s practice for the first time since tearing his biceps early in training camp. It was a brutal injury considering he missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL last year, also suffered during camp.
Urban has not yet been removed from the injured reserved-designated to return list, but can now practice. He now has a 21-day window to practice before he must be activated or placed on season-ending IR.
“I was nervous, excited, a bunch of emotions,” Urban said of Monday’s practice. “Once I got out there, I settled down. It was just great to be around my coaches, teammates. It was just a great day.”
The Ravens highly value the 6-foot-7, 295-pound Virginia product, evidenced by using the one-time injured reserve designation on him instead of saving it for one of their other injured players.
Last week, Head Coach John Harbaugh said Urban was close to 100 percent healthy. Just because Urban began practicing doesn’t mean he’ll be ready to return to game action Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Harbaugh said the Ravens will monitor his progress in practice very closely because he hasn’t played much football the past couple years.
“He has played maybe three or four weeks of training camp since he got here two years ago, so these are going to be really valuable practices for him,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll have to see where he’s at – how he’s playing, how he’s moving, how the bicep responds to what he’s doing out there – and try to make a determination about whether he can help us or not.”
Urban was a fourth-round pick last season. He’s a heavy-handed prospect who should add to the defensive line rotation with veteran ![]()

The Ravens could use Urban’s run-stuffing presence and pass rush, particularly without outside linebacker ![]()
“He’s going to create problems, just because of his leverage and his size,” Harbaugh said. “He’s such a young player. We’re going to have to find out what kind of a player he is once he gets out there and gets going again.”
Urban said he felt during training camp that he was going to make an impact early in the season. Now that’s the plan for the second half.
“It’s been a long time coming. When the playing time does come, I think I can definitely make an impact,” Urban said.
“It sucks [being injured]. It’s a part of the game – a part of the game I’m well versed in. I’m kind of used to that frustration, dealing with it and channeling it into working hard and getting back and improve.”
