Ravens Fan Among Those Killed In Navy Shooting

Posted Sep 18, 2013

Mike Ridgell attended every Ravens home game since 1996, except when in Iraq.

One of the 12 people killed in Monday’s Washington, D.C., Navy Yard shooting was a dedicated Ravens fan.

Mike Ridgell, 52, of Westminster, Md., attended every Ravens home game since 1996, except those played when he was in Iraq.

Ridgell was at Sunday’s home game against the Cleveland Browns with his friends, wearing a Terrell Suggs jersey. His brother, Todd Ridgell, is a season-ticket holder in section 538.

Shawn Edwards, a friend who attends games with the Ridgell brothers, said he plans to drape a Suggs jersey over Mike’s empty seat during Sunday’s game against the Texans.

“We have a Raven brotherhood,” Edwards said. “We would go all summer without seeing each other. But as soon as we saw each other on Sundays, it was like we never left.”

Ridgell was a member of the Colts Corral marching band, and a fan of the Canadian Football League’s Baltimore Stallions in 1994 and 1995.

“He was all about Baltimore football. When the Ravens came to town, he started bleeding purple,” Edwards said. “He was very excitable, very enthusiastic, and had a deep passion for the game.”

Ridgell grew up in Brooklyn Park in Anne Arundel County. He was a Maryland State Police trooper before working at the Navy Yard. He spent three years in Iraq as a private security consultant, and was a highly-skilled sharpshooter.

Ridgell is survived by his wife, Tracey, and three daughters, Heather Hunt and Maddi and Megan Ridgell. Edwards said Ridgell was a devoted family man who always talked about his three girls.
