Ravens Hire Marc Trestman As Offensive Coordinator

Posted Jan 20, 2015

The former Bears coach will become the fourth Ravens offensive coordinator in as many years.

The Ravens offensive coordinator job wasn’t open for long.

The team hired former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman as the new offensive coordinator Tuesday afternoon, just three days after Gary Kubiak left to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos.

Trestman comes to Baltimore after a two-year stint as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. He was fired last month after the Bears went 5-11 this season.

Despite the disappointing finish to 2014 season, Trestman has a strong pedigree as an offensive mind. He has been the offensive coordinator for four NFL teams, including the Cleveland Browns while Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome was a player.

Trestman, 59, has a strong reputation for working with quarterbacks, and he guided the Bears to a top-10 offense in 2013 with Jay Cutler and Josh McCown taking the snaps. The passing game during his first year in Chicago set several records in the team’s 94-year-old franchise record book, including total passing yards (4,450), completion percentage (64.4), passing touchdowns (32) and passer rating (96.9).

He will now get to work with eight-year veteran Joe Flacco, who is coming off the best season of his career.

Before taking the Bears job, Trestman had left the NFL to become a head coach in the Canadian Football League.  During his five years in the CFL, Trestman led the Montreal Alouettes to back-to-back Grey Cup Championships.

Trestman has 18 years of coaching experience in the NFL, including eight as an offensive coordinator. His last time as an offensive coordinator came in Oakland in 2002-2003, where he helped lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl XXXVII appearance. During that season, Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon was named the NFL’s MVP after throwing for 4,689 yards.

The Ravens moved quickly during their coordinator search, and the only other reported interview was with Broncos former Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase. Hiring Trestman allows Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh to take care of one of the team’s most important decisions before heading to Arizona to coach the Pro Bowl this week.
