Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown & Coach of the Week

Posted Oct 19, 2017

During each week of the 2017 regular season, the Baltimore Ravens will recognize one local high school football game as its Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown.

After receiving 57 percent of a total 498,580 votes, this week’s Showdown features the Harford Technical (Bel Air, Md.) Cobras (7-0) at the Perryville Panthers (6-1). Kickoff is scheduled for tonight (10/19) at 7 p.m. Both teams remain unbeaten in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Susquehanna Division with only three weeks of regular season games to play.

In conjunction with The Baltimore Sun, a voting poll will be established each week to help select a game that will receive a visit from Ravens Cheerleaders and mascot Poe, have the stadium outfitted in Ravens banners and flags and obtain Ravens giveaways for fans in attendance. Additionally, a $1,000 donation will be awarded to each participating school’s respective athletic program, and following the matchup, each Showdown will be highlighted with a detailed game recap and photo gallery. Bonus prizes will also be awarded for games that reach a significant total in the voting poll.

Voting is now open for next weekend’s Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown and will close Tuesday (10/24). The games available for Week 9 are:

  • Tuscarora @ Linganore (10/27 @ 7:00 p.m.)
  • Governor Thomas Johnson @ Urbana (10/27 @ 7:00 p.m.)
  • South Carroll @ Manchester Valley (10/27 @ 7:00 p.m.)

Reggie White, varsity head football coach of the Milford Mill Academy (Baltimore, Md.) Millers, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Now in its 21st year of existence, White is the seventh recipient of the award in 2017. He receives the honor for the third time, including once in 2008, and again in 2012, when he was also named Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

Last Saturday, Milford Mill hosted the Franklin (Reisterstown, Md.) Indians in a matchup of Baltimore County Division I perennial powers. After trailing 21-6 in the fourth quarter, the Millers scored 20 unanswered points in the final frame to defeat their county foe for the first time since 2012.

Led by senior QB/DB Brandon Savage, who tallied two passing scores and hauled in a crucial late-game interception on defense, Milford Mill snapped the Indians’ 36-game regular season winning streak against Baltimore County opponents.

“We had a couple of tough games already this season where we had to show grit and will to earn the victory, and those tests prepared us well for Franklin,” White explained. “Even after going down two touchdowns, the kids never got down on themselves mentally, and our seniors stepped up to make some really big plays to help us get the win.”

Milford Mill hosts Catonsville this Saturday (10/21) at 1 p.m., as the Millers seek another victory over the Comets following their 2016 win (30-14).

Each week during the season, the Ravens honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. All 10 Coach of the Week winners receive a $2,000 donation to their school’s football program and an award from Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. In addition, each coach will attend the Ravens-Colts game at M&T Bank Stadium on Dec. 23 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

These initiatives are just a piece of Ravens RISE, the team’s football outreach program presented by Wendy’s. The program impacts a range of area football players from youth to high school, providing them with a year-round opportunity to “Play Like A Raven” through clinics, tournaments, grants, ticket donations and exclusive opportunities to play at M&T Bank Stadium and interact with Ravens players and coaches.
