Ravens Roster Cut Buzz

Posted Aug 31, 2013

Rumors, reports and tweets leading up to the 53-man roster limit deadline on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Ravens have to get the roster down to 53 players by Saturday at 6  p.m. Cuts will be made over the course of today and tomorrow, according to Head Coach John Harbaugh.

The team does not officially release cuts until the entire process is complete.

Here are rumors, reports and tweets of cuts:

Released – WR Tandon Doss
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The Ravens have reportedly parted ways with the third-year wide receiver. The former fourth-round entered training camp competing for the No. 2 receiver spot, but he struggled to separate himself in the preseason. The Ravens then brought in veteran Brandon Stokley midway through training camp to work as the team’s slot receiver. During his time with the Ravens, Doss never saw much action on offense. He was stuck behind Anquan Boldin for the last two years and was then passed up by Stokley and rookies Marlon Brown and Aaron Mellette this training camp.

Released – RB Bobby Rainey
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The Ravens have cut another running back, parting ways with Rainey on Saturday. The second-year back made a strong push for a roster spot with his two-touchdown performance in the final preseason game, but the Ravens ultimately decided not to keep him. Rainey could end up on the practice squad, which is where he spent most  of last season.

Released – S Omar Brown
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The Ravens have reportedly cut the former undrafted safety out of Marshall. Brown spent most of last season on the practice squad before getting moved to the active roster late in the year. Brown, who earned the nickname “Baby Ed Reed” from his teammates, made a push for a roster spot with five tackles and a forced fumble in the final preseason game. He is another candidate for a practice squad spot.

Released – OL Antoine McClain
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The Ravens reportedly have reportedly cut the former practice squad player. McClain is an interior lineman who was competing for a spot at guard behind Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele. McClain dealt with a foot injury earlier in the offseason, but he returned in training camp. McClain could be a candidate to head back to the practice squad if he makes it through waivers.

Released – TE Billy Bajema
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The team has reportedly parted ways with the veteran tight end. Bajema was the team’s No. 3 tight end last year behind Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. He was primarily used as a blocker and did not catch a pass all season. Bajema could end up back in Baltimore, however. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Ravens could re-sign him after placing Pitta  on Injured Reserve –Designated to Return on Tuesday.

Released – TE Matt Furstenburg
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The team has reportedly parted ways with the undrafted tight end out of Maryland. Furstenburg was competing with veteran Billy Bajema for a roster  spot, and it appears that the Ravens may have opted to go with the veteran behind Ed Dickson and Dallas Clark. Furstenburg could be a candidate for the practice squad.

Released – OL J.J. Unga, DL Cody Larsen
The Baltimore Sun, 8/31

The Ravens have reportedly cut a pair of undrafted linemen. Unga is a developmental offensive lineman who the Ravens used primarily at right tackle. Larsen worked behind veterans Chris Canty, Marcus Spears and Arthur Jones, and he drew praise from teammates and coaches during training camp, but he was ultimately unable to nab a spot on the 53-man squad.

Released – TE Alex Silvestro
The Baltimore Sun, 8/30
Silvestro was competing with veteran Billy Bajema and undrafted rookie Matt Furstenburg for the No. 3 tight end spot behind Ed Dickson and Dallas Clark. Silvestro, a former defensive end, spent last season on the practice squad after being signed in November.  During the preseason, Silvestro was primarily just used on special teams and did not make a catch.

Released – CB Marc Anthony
The Baltimore Sun, 8/30
The Ravens reportedly parted ways with the final pick of the 2013 draft class. The Cal product showed some flashed in the preseason, including Thursday night when he recovered a fumble against the Rams. The move leaves the Ravens will just four corners on the roster – Lardarius Webb, Jimmy Smith, Corey Graham and Chykie Brown

Released – ILB Nigel Carr
The Baltimore Sun, 8/30
Carr did not make the team last year out of the preseason, but was signed to the practice squad in mid-October. He didn’t make it to the 53-man roster. The former Alabama State standout, who left Florida State after some off-the-field issues, was a very high intensity, vocal member of the defense.

Released – RB Anthony Allen
The Baltimore Sun, 8/30
Allen was also cut after last preseason, but soon signed back to the active roster. He played a key special teams role, paving the way for Pro Bowl returner Jacoby Jones. Allen fumbled on the 1-yard line Thursday night in St. Louis. His release would mean backup Bobby Rainey or veteran Delone Carter made the team, or the Ravens opted to keep two running backs and two fullbacks.
