Ravens Sign CB Chris Johnson, Place Bobby Rainey On Injured Reserve

The Ravens signed former Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson on Tuesday.


The Ravens added some reinforcements to their secondary.

The team signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson to the active roster Tuesday. To make room for Johnson on the 53-man roster, Baltimore placed rookie running back Bobby Rainey on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Johnson, 33, finished last season on the reserve/non-football injury list following the tragic shooting death of his sister by her estranged boyfriend. His 53-year-old mother was also shot, but she survived. Johnson was then cut by the Raiders in March and did not go to a training camp with any team this summer.

The nine-year veteran spent the last five seasons with the Raiders, and has also played for the St. Louis Rams and Green Bay Packers. During his time with Raiders, Johnson started 29 games and logged eight interceptions.

He adds depth to a secondary that has been hindered by injuries to starting cornerback Lardarius Webb (torn ACL) and Jimmy Smith (groin). Webb is done for the season and Smith missed Sunday’s game against Oakland after he wasn’t able to get loose during pre-game warmups.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said after Sunday’s game, “We're going to have to take a hard look at [Smith’s injury] Monday and just see where he’s at.” Smith’s status for Sunday’s game is currently unknown.

The move to IR ends a three-game stretch on the active roster for Rainey. The undrafted running back from Western Kentucky was inactive for all three games he was on the 53-man roster after spending the first six weeks of the season on the practice squad.
