Ravens Sign Nine Players To Practice Squad

Posted Aug 31, 2014

Baltimore retained rookie QB Keith Wenning, OL Ryan Jensen and OLB John Simon.

The Ravens were able to retain many of the players they released in the final round of cuts.

Baltimore signed nine players to its practice squad on Sunday afternoon. There is still one more spot available, as the squad increased from eight to 10 players.

Here's the practice squad, as of now:

  • CB Tramain Jacobs
  • OL Ryan Jensen
  • DT Jamie Meder
  • CB Deji Olatoye
  • DT A.J. Pataiali'i
  • OLB John Simon
  • TE Phillip Supernaw
  • RB Fitzgerald Toussaint
  • QB Keith Wenning

All of the players had to pass through waivers, and there was speculation that some could be scooped up by other teams.

A few of the more well-known names on the list are rookie quarterback Keith Wenning, outside linebacker John Simon and offensive lineman Ryan Jensen.

The Ravens opted to go with just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but now they can work to develop Wenning on the practice squad and give him another shot to back up Joe Flacco next year. Tyrod Taylor's contract ends after this season, so it will be a prime chance for Wenning.

The sixth-round pick out of Ball State showed improvement in the Ravens' final preseason game in New Orleans, completing 8-of-13 passes for 117 yards.

Simon was one of the biggest surprise cuts on Saturday considering he was a 2013 fourth-round pick. The Ohio State product shined in New Orleans with three tackles and one sack, but he plays at one of the deepest positions on the team.

Simon, who played in just seven games and made four tackles last year, can now continue to hone his skills.

Jensen was another former draft pick who was released after just one season on the active roster. The 2013 sixth-rounder was beaten out by rookie John Urschel. Jensen, who told The Baltimore Sun that he struggled with severe sleep apnea, provides more depth on the interior of the line.

Cornerback Tramain Jacobs is a player that Defensive Coordinator Dean Pees said has "great upside," who will get to develop his raw skills. Fellow undrafted cornerback Deji Olatoye also flashed early on during organized team activities and minicamp.

Undrafted running back Fitzgerald Toussaint showed he deserved an extended stay with a 17-carry, 103-yard performance in New Orleans, in which he showed great agility and burst.

The Ravens retained a pair of undrafted defensive linemen on the practice squad after keeping just five linemen on the active roster. Tight end Phillip Supernaw was a popular target in training camp and is another player who knows Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak's system well as a former Texan.

Any practice squad player can still be claimed by another team, but that team would have to put them on their active roster immediately.

Undrafted cornerback Sammy Seamster was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins, the team announced. Released center/guard A.Q. Shipley tweeted that he rejoined the Indianapolis Colts, who traded Shipley to Baltimore last year.

The Ravens can fill their final practice squad spot at any time.
