Ravens Sign Quarterback Ryan Mallett

Posted Dec 15, 2015

Backup QB Ryan Mallett worked out with the Ravens earlier this month. He started four games for Houston.

The Ravens have officially signed quarterback Ryan Mallett.

According to multiple reports, the deal also extends through the 2016 season.

The Ravens released Bryn Renner to make room for Mallett on the 53-man roster. Renner was Jimmy Clausen’s backup Sunday against the Seahawks.

Mallett worked out for the Ravens on Dec. 2, but was not immediately signed. There were reports Monday that he was going to sign with Baltimore, but it still wasn’t a done deal at that point.

“He had some personal things that he had to work through,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday. “If that happens in the near future, that would be great. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.”

Earlier this season, Mallett missed a Houston Texans team meeting the day after losing the starting job. He was cut by Houston on Oct. 27 after missing the team flight to Miami.

Mallett, 27, started four games earlier this season with the Texans. He went 1-3 under center and completed 70 of 134 passes (52.2 percent), threw for 770 yards and had three touchdowns and four interceptions.

The 2011 third-round pick out of Arkansas backed up Tom Brady for three years in New England before being traded to Houston. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound gunslinger is known for his strong arm.

Clausen played well enough to be considered for the starting job moving forward, completing 23 of 40 passes for 274 yards and one interception, but didn’t lead any touchdown drives.

Mallett’s immediate role on the Ravens will likely be determined by how quickly he can learn the offense.
