Ravens Sign RB Bernard Scott

Posted Oct 28, 2013

The former Cincinnati Bengals running back has averaged 4.1 yards per carry.

The Ravens have signed running back Bernard Scott, filling their final roster spot left vacant after trading tackle Bryant McKinnie to Miami.

Scott is a former Bengal who played in Cincinnati for four years before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament five games into last season.

Scott, 29, was released by the Bengals this September after trying to come back from the injury. Cincinnati went with rookie running back Giovani Bernard instead.

Scott is a shifty speedster who was often used on third downs in Cincinnati. His best season came in 2011 when he ran 112 times for 380 yards. He has averaged 4.1 yards per carry during his career and totaled 1,035 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

“He’s a speed guy on the perimeter, pass-catcher out of the backfield,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said. “He’s a threat, he’s a dangerous guy. He’s a guy that can take it the distance at any time. We saw him practice today, he looked good, had a good start. We’ll see where it goes.”

Harbaugh added that Scott can run between the tackles and is pretty good in pass protection. Scott has also been used as a kick returner, where he’s averaged 24.5 yards per return.

He will help the Ravens playing behind Ray Rice and with backup Bernard Pierce banged up. Pierce was not at practice during the portion open to the media last week due to a reported hamstring injury.

Harbaugh was asked how quickly Scott can contribute considering the injuries.

“I think we’ll just play it by ear,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll have to see how it plays out; it’s hard to say. We’re going to get him ready as quickly as we can and there’s no reason he can’t get up to speed very rapidly.”
