Ravens Trim Roster Down To 75

Posted Aug 25, 2014

The Ravens had to trim 15 players from the roster, waiving S Omar Brown and WR LaQuan Williams.

The first round of cuts came on Monday, as the Ravens went from 90 players to 75.

Baltimore had until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to get down to the required 75, but made their moves ahead of the deadline.

“Today is one of two really challenging days in the National Football League,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said. “We’ve all been turned down for an opportunity at some point in time, and that’s really what today is for a lot of guys whose dream it is to play in the National Football League.

“You want to make it clear to them that this is not permanent, it’s not final – ‘no’ does not mean ‘never’ – and the opportunity is still there for a lot of guys. … That was a tough day. Some tears, some hugs, and you come back out and you go back to work.”

Here’s the list:

Waived

  • S Omar Brown, Marshall
  • OLB Nicholas DiMarco, William Penn
  • P Richie Leone, Houston
  • OT David Mims, Virginia Union
  • CB Marrio Norman, Coastal Carolina
  • CD Deji Olatoye, North Carolina A&T
  • LB Austin Spitler, Ohio State
  • WR LaQuan Williams, Maryland
  • WR Mike Willie, Arizona
  • RB Cierre Wood, Notre Dame

Waived - Injured

  • FB Shaun Chapas, Georgia
  • OT Brent Van Sloten, Iowa

Injured Reserve

A couple of the more recognizable names on the list are Brown and Williams, who Harbaugh pointed to specifically.

“[They are] just two guys who have been here for a long time, have been Ravens for a number of years and have contributed so much to us,” Harbaugh said. “That’s the toughest thing. They’re going to go play for other teams – I don’t doubt that at all. But those guys have contributed so much and we’re so appreciative of what they’ve done.”

This was Brown’s third training camp with the Ravens. He was on the Super Bowl squad in 2012, but spent most of his time on the practice squad. Brown, who was nicknamed “Baby Ed Reed” for having a nose for the football, was active for three games in 2012 and just one game last season despite spending half the year on the 53-man roster. He has three career tackles.

Brown is known for being a ball hawk, but hasn’t shown as much of that this summer, and the Ravens have an influx of young safeties with Brynden Trawick, who made an interception in Dallas, Anthony Levine, who showed he can also play cornerback against Washington, and third-round pick Terrence Brooks.

Williams was brought back this summer after being released in last year’s final cut down. The former Terp is known for his special teams prowess, but he was beaten out by other wide receivers at a deep position. Williams was competing with seventh-round pick Michael Campanaro, Deonte Thompson, Kamar Aiken and undrafted rookies Jeremy Butler and Jace Davis.

Leone is an undrafted rookie out of Houston who was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award. Leone challenged incumbent Sam Koch, who is entering his ninth year with the Ravens. Koch has punted well this preseason and won the job.

Putting Lewis-Moore and Urban on injured reserve is a formality. It officially ends their seasons. Rackley, the former Jacksonville Jaguar who the Ravens signed in mid-May, hasn’t practiced since the first day of training camp. The Ravens have a lot of depth on the interior of their offensive line.

The Ravens have to get down to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m.

Fans can make their selections in the You Pick The Team contest, and have a chance to win two tickets to see the Ravens face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.
