The Ravens waived injured wide receiver and return specialist Kaelin Clay Monday morning.
Clay injured his foot in Saturday’s practice, according to Head Coach John Harbaugh.
The Ravens have signed rookie free agent wide receiver Darius White to take Clay’s spot on the roster. White was a USA Today High School All-American (2009) who caught 30 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns in his final season at Missouri. He has very limited return experience.
Clay joined the Ravens midway through last season and was the team’s primary returner for seven games.
He returned 23 punts and averaged 10.6 yards per return, the fourth-highest mark in the NFL. He scored an 82-yard touchdown against the Browns in 2015. Clay also returned 14 kicks and averaged 24.5 yards.
Clay was in the thick of the Ravens’ competition to be this year’s returner, but didn’t help himself when he muffed a punt in last Thursday’s preseason opener.
“We have to find a punt returner that can catch the ball, and I think we knew that,” Harbaugh said after the game. “Kaelin Clay can catch the ball. He’s proven that in games, so I was really surprised by that one.”
