Ray Lewis Won’t Coach, Will Get Statue

Posted Feb 7, 2013

John Harbaugh has talked with Lewis about coaching, but the legendary linebacker isn’t interested.

Now that Ray Lewis’ playing days in Baltimore have come to a close, the question is what’s next for the future Hall of Famer.

One idea that can be crossed off the list is having Lewis join the Ravens coaching staff.

“He has not expressed an interest in coaching,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said with a smile during Thursday’s end-of-season press conference. “I have asked him and he’s not interested.

“Ray is iconic. He is going to be doing just so many amazing, powerful things and he’s excited about those things.”

Harbaugh does hope that Lewis is still a familiar face at practice and around the Under Armour Performance Center.

“All of the guys that have played here come back often, and they talk to players and they’re always welcome, of course Ray would be no less,” he said. “We have talked about it and he knows he’s always welcome.”

While Lewis won’t be joining the team’s coaching staff, the franchise still has plans to honor him as an iconic part of the organization.

A reporter asked if a statue of Lewis was something that may go up around M&T Bank Stadium.

Owner Steve Bisciotti left little doubt that a Lewis statue would soon be coming to Baltimore.

“The fact that you said ‘maybe,’” Bisciotti said, referencing the question, “I’ll say absolutely maybe. Yeah. We have to work that out.”

Getting a Lewis statue outside of the stadium is only a matter of time and finding the right place to put it, Bisciotti said.

“I think he set himself apart in Baltimore sports history and we will certainly look into it,” Bisciotti said. “I would not be surprised if there is one there in the next year or two.”
