Ray Rice, Chris Canty Could Play This Week

Posted Sep 23, 2013

Nose tackle Terrence Cody will likely be out after injuring his knee Sunday.

Running back Ray Rice missed his first game since his rookie season on Sunday, as a hip injury kept him out of the matchup with the Houston Texans.

The Ravens hope it will just be a one-week hiatus for the Pro Bowl running back.

“We have a chance to get Ray back,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday. “We’ll see as the week goes on how that goes.”

Rice suffered the hip flexor strain in the fourth quarter of the Week 2 matchup with the Cleveland Browns and did not return to the game. He sat out practice all last week, but Harbaugh indicated that he was close to suiting up on Sunday.

Veteran defensive lineman Chris Canty (groin) also missed Sunday’s game because of an injury, and the Ravens hope to get him back on the field this week against Buffalo.

“[Ray] was close this week to a degree, so was Chris,” Harbaugh said. “Those muscle things, you never know for sure, but they were in the ballpark this week and we think they’ll really be in the ballpark coming up.”

Second-year running back Bernard Pierce started in place of Rice and Marcus Spears started for Canty. Pierce finished the game with 24 carries for 65 yards, and Spears had three tackles.

Recently-signed running back Shaun Draughn was the team’s No. 2 back Sunday, but he suffered a high ankle sprain in the fourth quarter. The Ravens would likely have to bring in another running back if both Rice and Draughn are out this weekend, but Harbaugh said there was “nothing imminent” with adding another player.

The other major injury concern from Sunday’s game was the knee sprain nose tackle Terrence Cody suffered. Cody left the game in the first quarter and did not return, and he will likely be out this weekend.

“I think it would be a stretch to expect him back this week,” Harbaugh said. “We’re going to try. In all likelihood it will be after this week.”

If Cody and Canty are both unable to play, then second-year lineman DeAngelo Tyson will likely see an increase in his playing time.
