Ray Rice Named AFC Offensive Player of the Week

Posted Nov 28, 2012

The Ravens running back won the award after his memorable 4th-and-29 conversion.

Ray Rice has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week after a memorable performance during Sunday’s 16-13 comeback win against the San Diego Chargers.

The Ravens running back had 97 rushing yards on 22 carries, and 67 receiving yards on eight catches.

But it was his catch and run in the fourth quarter that still has everyone talking.

With the Ravens facing 4th-and-29 in the fourth quarter and trailing by three points, the Ravens turned for Rice on a last-ditch effort. Quarterback Joe Flacco hit Rice on a dump off pass just beyond the line of scrimmage, leaving him 28 yards to get the first down to keep alive the Ravens’ hopes of winning.

Rice avoided three Chargers defenders in the open field, headed toward the left sideline, then broke a pair of tackles as he was brought down just beyond the first-down marker.

“It was the greatest play I’ve ever seen or been a part of,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said.

“It’s one of the most amazing plays I’ve ever seen in a football game,” linebacker Terrell Suggs added.

After the game, Rice nicknamed the play, “Hey Diddle, Diddle, Ray Rice up the Middle.”

The first-down conversion set up a game-tying field goal at the end of regulation and then the Ravens won the game with another field goal in overtime.

This is Rice’s first time of the season winning the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, and fourth time of his career.

Rice is also nominated for the GMC “Never Say Never” Moment of the Week, which is voted on by the fans. Fans can go here to vote for Rice.
