Reports: Ravens Cut WR Tandon Doss

Posted Aug 31, 2013

The Ravens parted ways with the three-year veteran who didn’t seize his opportunity.

Just a month ago, Tandon Doss looked to be competing for the No. 2, or very least, No. 3 wide receiver spot.

On Saturday morning, reports broke that the Ravens cut Doss in what will likely be the biggest-name release as the team gets to 53 players.

It seemed that the Ravens were looking to trade a wide receiver, including possibly Doss, but may not have been able to find any partners.

Doss, 23, was a fourth-round pick in 2010, just two rounds after Baltimore selected wide receiver Torrey Smith. Doss didn’t immediately break out like Smith. Instead, he studied multiple positions behind veteran Anquan Boldin.

Doss started to emerge late last season after Jim Caldwell took over as offensive coordinator. He made seven receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown, and was targeted a handful of times in the playoffs.

The former Indiana product entered this year’s training camp with a prime opportunity to take over the position vacated by Boldin, who was traded to San Francisco.

Instead, Doss was streaky throughout practice, and saw his snaps cut into by former undrafted wide receiver Deonte Thompson in the slot. When Thompson was injured in the team’s first preseason game, the Ravens signed veteran Brandon Stokley, who quickly fit in well.

Doss saw his practice action decline, then had a couple rough preseason games. A miscommunication between he and quarterback Joe Flacco led to an interception in the third game against Carolina, and left Flacco atypically barking at Doss as the two walked off the field.

Rookie wide receivers Aaaron Mellette and Marlon Brown, a seventh-round pick and undrafted player, respectively, outshined Doss on the field. They each caught two touchdown passes over the course of the preseason, and appear to have both made the 53-man roster.

Doss finished the preseason with a good showing in St. Louis, where he caught five balls for 75 yards, but finished the preseason with just seven catches for 85.

Harbaugh has long preached that whoever plays the best will get a roster spot, regardless of where they were drafted or how experienced they are.

If Doss is indeed released, he would finish his Ravens career with 20 games played, seven catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.

The Ravens also reportedly cut running back Bobby Rainey, tight ends Billy Bajema and Matt Furstenburg and safety Omar Brown Saturday morning. There are still more cuts to be made.
